WELLNESS SPECIAL
I
t was almost three years ago that I
bumped into Mini Shastri at an upscale
furnishing store in South Delhi. I was
in the last trimester of pregnancy, and
Mini was putting the finishing touches
on her brand-new home, a two-acre
farmhouse on the outskirts of New Delhi, which
she shares with husband Diwakar Shastri.
When we meet again, my son has grown
into a toddler who is already asserting his
independence. Mini’s house has transformed
into a fully established home, complete with vast
stretches of manicured lawns, mature trees, a
wealth of biodiversity, and three family dogs that
enthusiastically run around, greeting visitors
with unbridled excitement!
It comes as no surprise when Mini reveals that
she undertook the challenging task of designing
this home entirely on her own. Free-spirited
and fearless, she has always wholeheartedly
embraced challenges. In her 20s, she initiated
her extraordinary yogic journey, accumulating
500 hours of Vinyasa Krama training, obtaining
certification from Sivananda Yoga and Yoga

Alliance. Subsequently, she earned a diploma in
Ayurveda and continually broadens her wellness
expertise whenever she gets a chance to learn
something new.
“One of the things I have really admired
about Mini is her ability to dedicatedly complete
a task when she takes up something. I can be
lazy at times, but Mini is very committed to her
goals,” says Diwakar.

engaging in culinary indulgences that typically
deviate from the mostly vegetarian lifestyle the
family follows. “I sometimes make mutton but
now it’s just me and my daughter Devika that
enjoy it,” he says.
The couple’s eldest daughter Gayatri lives
in the US, working as a brand strategist for
Victoria’s Secret, while the two younger
children, Gayatri and Kartikeya, are currently
pursuing their school education and reside in
New Delhi with their parents. They are a close-
knit bunch that enjoys travelling together. Their
frequent getaways involve visiting their home
in the hills of Seetla in Uttarakhand, situated
6,500 feet above sea level. “We also travel a
lot to tiger reserves and forests including to
Bandhavgarh, Corbett and Kanha. Some of
our other favourite holiday destinations include
Sri Lankan beaches and the tea estates of South
India,” informs Mini.
The youngest of the three, Kartikeya, has
developed an interest in yoga and practices with
his mother whenever he gets the chance. “We’re
clear that we lead by example. Our effort is to
live mindfully, to prioritise mental and physical
health and take time out to be in nature every
couple of months with the kids. We also practice
slow living and clean food as often as we can,”
adds Mini.
Family plays a central role in the lives of Mini
and Diwakar. A businessman who specialises in
providing lighting solutions to residential and
office spaces, he also serves as a legacy bearer,
being the grandson of India’s former Prime
Minister, the late Lal Bahadur Shastri. Bearing
a strong physical resemblance to the late PM,
Diwakar is very much a chip off the old block.
There is an old-world charm around him as he
reminisces about staying in a joint family with
his grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins at
Lal Bahadur’s house in Janpath, which was later
converted into his memorial. “Those were fun
days and the way we celebrated festivals was
quite memorable,” he recalls, a hint of nostalgia
in his voice. However, one thing that was not
celebrated in the house was birthdays! “In the
Shastri family, we never celebrated birthdays but
when my grandfather became Prime Minister,
his birthday was celebrated by people around
him and the next year he passed away. My
grandmother, who was superstitious about it,

made a strict rule to not celebrate any birthday
within the family after that,” he explains. While
the elders in the family refrain from birthday
celebrations, the Shastris have relaxed the rules
for their children. Clearly, the family embodies a
unique fusion of traditional and modern values.

O
ver the years, I found myself feeling disconnected from
the fast-paced adventures that I used to be attracted to.
I met new people who I felt an instant connection to;
their magical aura was something that I aspired to have. And so,
I went after it!
I was burnt out, running on empty as they say. It’s a constant
struggle; there are so many patterns to unlearn and I let go of
habits that were holding me back — for instance, I quit smoking
three years ago.
Once you start making changes and surrender to a higher
power with full faith, you are blessed with a burst of courage. I
was lucky to have been in Rishikesh for a yoga course when the
world went into lockdown, in 2020. It was life changing and I
ended up staying there for over a year.
Being so close to the magnificent Ganga has taught me to go
with the flow. My days are very different from what they used to
be. And while this year has been particularly challenging, I have
gotten through it with yoga and the support of my friends and
spiritual family.
I am designing two lines at the moment; one being a
sustainable brand called Ash & Eden, dedicated to uplifting
Indian artisans. I get to create magic with the craftsmen in
villages. I also still have my eponymous fashion label and though
I closed my stores, I kept a small factory running for my clients.
And I’m glad I did, because now I am planning to expand again,
but in a very different way.
Anything is possible if one is disciplined and has a plan; a
dream. Balance is key and admittedly, I struggle with this. But
each day is a new opportunity to become the best version of
myself.

my physical well-being.
In 2013, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune
skin condition called lupus. This revelation
prompted me to slow down, introspect and take
control of my health. This is when I turned to yoga,
delving into its practice and immersing myself in
studying and reading about it.
That pivotal moment marked a profound shift
in my life and lifestyle, transforming them forever.
I now make sure to carve out personal time,
especially in the morning. Instead of immediately

Today, I’m calmer, my anxiety and cortisol

W
hat is the right choice for me? That is the
pivotal question on everyone’s mind when
contemplating procedures to shed weight
or reverse the signs of aging. The landscape
of cosmetic procedures and aesthetics
has come a long way in giving people their desired face and
body, offering non-invasive or minimally invasive options for
achieving desired changes in appearance, minimising the risks
associated with surgical interventions.
Thanks to ongoing medical advancements and evolving
standards, what works (and what does not) as of today differs
from yesterday, and tomorrow. Innovations, research and
development are quick in this field and there’s a constant
influx of improved technology coming in only to make the last
one quasi obsolete. Does that mean the filler you did last year
is not the right thing for your under-eye area rejuvenation?
No. It only means that there is better technology available now
compared to what was perhaps considered gold standard then.
As we step into the new year, HELLO! consults with top
aesthetic practitioners to unveil treatments expected to trend
in 2024.

playing with a bat and ball when I was barely
three. As a child my hero was my dad, and he was
obsessed with cricket, especially Sachin Tendulkar.
The first thing I did was try to copy Sachin sir’s
straight drive, when I got a bat in my hand.”
When termed the next Kohli, the suave batsman
is quick to reply, “It’s every child’s dream in India
to one day play at the World Cup. I was 11 years
old when I saw Dhoni lift the trophy. It’s my dream
to one day represent the national team and win the
cup for India again. Being called the next Virat
Kohli is a great compliment. I don’t feel more
pressurised by it, but I know in the back of my head
that there is a long way to go, for me as a player and
a batsman.”
While his fan following is only increasing these
days, Shubman does manage to get his fair amount
of flack online, as is the nature of social media and
the revolving culture. “Being trolled is part and
parcel of being on social media,” says Shubman,
“Initially they might come across as rude, but over
a period of time you get used to it and over it. It’s
very easy for someone to write whatever they want
to online, you can’t get affected by someone sitting
thousands of miles away. The Instafame is great, as
long as people keep in mind that I’m just a normal
guy at heart and don’t like to get my privacy
invaded just like anyone else out there.”
As for what the next year holds, the cricketer
shared his aspirations for 2023 on Instagram,
noting the achievements and the goals still in
progress. “Hopefully, we’ll get closer to our goals
in 2024,” he wrote. Considering the pace he’s
maintaining, we’re sure he will!

is slowly becoming quite a formidable
force on the national scene. Her work with
the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation (PDFK)
and her role as an unofficial ambassador of sorts
for the family has won her much applause from
taste makers and opinion shapers alike. Gauravi
Kumari studied Media and Communication
at NYU along with a course in fashion which
led to her pursuing a career in design. “I think

adding, “When I moved to New York, a hub of
fashion and design, everyone exuded style on the
streets. The abundance of design inspiration in
the city sparked my interest, and soon, a project
materialised with my friend Claire Deroo.”
Today the Princess creates clothes using age
old techniques under the PDKF umbrella,
providing employment to several artisans and
women workers in Jaipur and beyond.
“The PDKF was started by my mother,
Princess Diya Kumari, in 2013 for the upliftment
and welfare of women in the rural areas of
Rajasthan,” explains Gauravi. “At present we
have 100+ women working with us across six
centres. The women are trained on heritage
craft techniques like gotapatti, hand embroidery,
toy-making, quilting, block printing, stitching,
thread and bead work, etc.”
While Gauravi manages to take care of her
duties as a budding royal and the daughter
of Rajasthan’s newly-minted Deputy Chief
Minister, many see her growing social reach and
fame as an asset to the Jaipur family, something
that only signals to a more promising and
successful life ahead for the lady. Hosting the
recent Ralph Lauren party at City Palace in
Jaipur or gracing the front row of Dior’s show
in Mumbai, both have been moments where the

I came across some new editions
of this iconic comic book brand, known best for
its mythological stories, at the Jaipur Literature

instead: there was one on “the Pioneer of

Ardeshir and Pirojsha Godrej.
The stories celebrated the farsightedness
of the builders of independent India, with
delightful anecdotes on the idea that led to the
creation of India’s first homegrown refrigerator,
the steel safe and even, the humble lock.
How wonderful it is to put these stories out to
today’s young India, giving them a glimpse of
how we came together as a nation, I thought.
And then I turned the last page and saw the
heartfelt note written by the lady behind these
books: Nyrika Holkar.

also influenced by the pujas and practices that were a part
of our daily life at our ancestral home. As a child, I woke
up to the sound of aarti, temple bells and the fragrance of
incense, as the priest would perform the morning rituals
at the family shrine. My grandmother would always feed
crows, cows and stray dogs, and when I was in boarding

I count my college years in England as being some of the

was in a wonderful relationship, I had great friends. Each
morning, I would wake up filled with joy and an upswell
of gratitude. And soon, that turned into a meditation
practice, which has now become a lifelong habit. Before I
open my eyes every morning and before I sleep at night,
I give thanks to the Universe, the Almighty, my ancestors
and my Guru. This isn’t a practice that I consciously
cultivated, it’s something that has evolved naturally. I go
into a deep meditative state and I don’t know how many

Gangs of Wasseypur — Part 1, the versatile actress
now wears many hats, including that of an author.
She openly acknowledges feeling apprehensive
about this new venture. “Starting the journey of
writing felt like navigating uncharted waters,” she
confesses, adding, “like I was making my debut
all over again.” Contrary to her move into films,
which naturally followed her involvement in theatre
in her hometown of New Delhi, her venture into
writing began at an early stage. “I’ve always been
a doodler and a writer. I’ve been journalling for 20
years, capturing my thoughts and my day. You can
call it self-help, therapy or just vomiting your day
out —scheduling, manifesting, planning,” she says.
The idea of a superhero tale, which eventually
became Zeba, was a product of the pandemic — an
outcome of one of Huma’s more fruitful journalling
sessions. Initially conceived as a 10-page script, she
found herself pondering the substantial budget
required for a film adaptation. When the lockdown
happened, she made a pivot. “I decided to do
something way cooler, which is making it a book.”

AN ENTERTAINING STORY
THAT SIMPLY HAD TO BE SHARED
Zeba unfolds in a fantasy world, narrating the
story of a daughter born to the despotic king,
The Great Khan. Sentenced to die at birth, she
miraculously survives. Unaware of her origin
story, she is discovered by her father’s liberal
brother and raised by her uncle’s family in exile.
Eventually, Zeba and family return to their homeland,
where discontent against the king is brewing. Zeba has
a brief entanglement with a charming but narcissistic
superstar, reunites with her saviour and discovers her
superpower. The narrative hurtles towards an epic
clash between Zeba and Khan.
At its core, the book operates as a “you are my father”
narrative, reminiscent of Harry Potter or Star Wars.
Readers have the option to explore further, uncovering
a feminist perspective in Zeba’s badass character,
discerning a cultural commentary in her choice of a
burkha as a cape, or identifying a political statement in
the notion of challenging a despotic regime through
a group of dissenters. While recognising that readers

may draw different meanings from the book, Huma
confesses that she didn’t have any of these ideas in mind
when she wrote it. “I just felt it was a really entertaining
story that needed to be shared,” she explains. “It’s about
a misfit becoming a chosen superhero to save us all.
She doesn’t have to have it all together; she may need
therapy like the rest of us. That’s the story I wanted to
tell — whatever people choose to infer from it.”
For the narrative technique of stories within stories,
she credits the books she grew up on — Arabian Nights
and the Panchatantra — while the characters inhabit a
little piece of her.
“Not just Zeba; I see myself in Kherun, Umar,
Ayesha, even Khan.” What could an outspoken feminist
like her possibly have in common with a cruel tyrant?

Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s manager
Anjula Acharia at The Pierre in New
York this November marked another
shining moment in their illustrious career, which has seen
a dream run since their debut collection at India Fashion
Week. Reminiscing, Falguni shares, “In 2004-2005, when
we established our brand, we were young and new to the
fashion business. We didn’t have a mentor, social media
or the instant access to the internet that exists today. All
we could rely on was our gut instinct and our intuition.”
Their instincts, guiding their initial foray into the world
of fashion toward the West, proved spot on. The Peacocks
debut collection was swiftly bought out by Harrods, Villa
Moda and other retailers abroad, marking the beginning
of their remarkable journey. Since then, they have
continued to add feather after feather to their stylish cap
including participating in international fashion weeks,
dressing top global stars like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga,
receiving honours such as the prestigious Shiromani
Awards at the NRI World Summit in London and an
invitation to attend the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Back home, the Peacocks headlined India Couture
Week in 2023 and have been actively launching stores,
most recently in Hyderabad, designed by Gauri Khan.
“We attribute all of this to our intuition, gut feeling and
