Introduction

What is Solar Pumping System ?

Solar pumping system harnesses
solar energy to provide electricity.

Highly effective in situation where

electric supply is unreliable.

Solar pumps can be used for irrigation,

potable water supply

Types of Pumps
Water pumps are driven by electrical motors, which convert electrical energy (produced, in the case
of solar pumps, by PV panels) into mechanical energy.

1. Submersible Pumps
2. Surface Pumps

STANDALONE AND GRID-CONNECTED SOLAR PUMPS

STANDALONE connected solar pumps Grid connected solar pumps

Standalone pumps are not connected to the Grid connected solar pumps are becoming
main electrical grid, and the pump completely popular gradually. Here, the pump can switch
runs on the energy harnessed from the solar it’s source of power from solar energy to grid
panels connected to the pump. connected electricity in the absence of
sunlight.

Excess energy produced by the solar panels

during the day can be directed to the grid,
which is sold and acts as a source of extra
income for the pump owners.

OPERATIONS OF SOLAR PUMP

Solar modules capture the energy from the Pump controller is a device that matches the
Sunlight and convert it to Electricity which input power with the output power to run the

According to the water source used,

Solar Pump can be Submersible & Surface

A 5 HP pump can irrigate 5 acres of paddy

and 10-12 acres of horticultural crops with
micro-irrigation, if the water level is
present at 20 metres below the ground

level

The solar panels have a minimum lifespan

of 25 years and pumps have a lifetime of
10-15 years. The Solar modules and pump
have a warranty for 10 to 15 years and 2 to
5 years respectively

A 2 HP solar pump required about 200

square feet area to be installed, and a 5 HP
solar pump requires about 500 square feet
area

Does the government provide subsidies

for solar pump installation - Yes, there
are a lot of schemes going on, farmers
can get subsidies. Schemes like PM
KUSUM and FSSM.
