ESTERS

Group 5
ESTERS
An ester is a chemical compound derived from an acid
(organic or inorganic) in which at least one –OH hydroxyl
group is replaced by an –O– alkyl (alkoxy) group. To put it in
simple terms, esters are a group of chemical compounds
which are formed by bonding of an alcohol group with a
group of organic acids, by losing water molecules.
GENERAL FORMULA
Esters have the general formula
RCOOR' where R may be a
hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or an
aryl group, and R′ may be an alkyl
group or an aryl group but not a
hydrogen atom. The first R is
derived from a carboxylic acid, and
the second R' is derived from an
alcohol.

EXAMPLES
Esters are a diverse class of compounds formed by the reaction
between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid

Ethyl acetate: CH3COOCH2CH3

It is commonly used as a solvent in nail polish removers, paint
thinners, and adhesives due to its excellent solubility.
Methyl butanoate: CH3COOCH2CH2CH2CH3
This ester is often used in the food industry to impart a fruity
flavor to candies, beverages, and other food products.
Isopentyl acetate: CH3COOCH2CH(CH3)2
It is used in the production of artificial banana flavorings for
candies, baked goods, and some perfumes.
ECONOMIC
IMPORTANCE
Esters hold significant economic importance across various
industries. In the food industry, they're used as flavorings and
fragrances, enhancing the taste and smell of products. They're
key components in perfumes, cosmetics, and personal care items,
contributing to their appealing scents. In pharmaceuticals, esters
serve as intermediates in drug synthesis. Additionally, esters are
used in solvents, plastics, paints, and coatings, making them
integral in manufacturing processes. Their versatility and pleasant
attributes make them valuable in diverse commercial applications,
driving their economic significance.
