Dr.

Fe del Mundo:

Dr. Fe del Mundo was born on November 27, 1911, in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. She was
the sixth of eight children. After losing her older sister to appendicitis at a young age, she
decided to dedicate her life to pediatric medicine. She was the first woman admitted to Harvard
Medical School in 1936, despite the school not officially accepting women at the time.

Significant Achievements and Deeds:

Dr. del Mundo's dedication to child healthcare revolutionized pediatric medicine in the
Philippines. She founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines, the Children's Medical
Center, in 1957. The hospital was established primarily for the poor and served over 600
patients. In her practice, she developed a bamboo incubator, designed to operate without
electricity for use in rural communities without power. She also introduced a cloth-suspended
weighing scale for infants.Dr. del Mundo was the author of over a hundred articles, reviews,
and reports in medical journals on her research. She was recognized with numerous awards,
including the Elizabeth Blackwell Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind, the Ramon
Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1977, and was named National Scientist of the
Philippines in 1980.Dr. Fe del Mundo remained active in her profession until her late 90s. She
passed away in 2011, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional service and dedication to pediatric
medicine in the Philippines. Her contributions have saved countless lives and continue to
inspire future generations of medical practitioners.
