Graduation Attire IIM Shillong 2023

Report/Design Recommendation for IIM Shillong Convocation

Centre of Excellence for Khadi, Shillong

Celebrating PLURALITY OF IDEAS

As IIM Shillong goes into is 15th year of establishment in the Northeast region of India,it is poised very distinctly to offer
a contextually assimilative version of Management Education and Practice. A version which is anchored in two of the
most precious Institute Values of Openness and Compassion. .

The first step towards this vision has been taken by the institute to re-imagine the convocation attire as a pretext to
decolonize management education.
A convocation ceremony, as would better be represented closely by our cultural concept of “Dikshant” – wherein it is both
sacred and a celebration of the closure of the intellectual journey which was initiated by a “Guru”.

A symbolic representation of the region and the richness of plurality is sacred and a celebration in itself.

Just like the Northeast zone is a home to nearly 220 indigenous communities all residing in harmony, the institution every
year welcomes students from all of over the country who make this space their home and place of living.
It is the coexistence of opposites that needs to be celebrated and shown in its full glory and glamour. Along with the focus
on diversity, it is the institution’s responsibility to also reinforce the sense of identity and connectedness with their roots.
Celebrating PLURALITY OF IDEAS

To achieve this vision, the attire designed are body drapes or wraps in the institutional colors, available in the
Logo of white; green and yellow in a semi-checkered pattern inspired by the Khasi tribal wrap called MUKA.
To make the occasion more celebratory, these wraps should be worn by the student, faculty and dignitaries in
their own traditional attire to complete the entire intent of rejoicing the ritual.

Eg: If you belong to Kerala , you can wear the Kurta and Munde(lungi) and drape the wrap around you. If you belong to
Uttarakhand, you can wear the Kurta-Pyjama with the Kullu cap and drape the wrap around you. If you belong to
Rajasthan you can wear the Poshak and drape the wrap around you.

The drapes are 100% pure eri silk khadi, which is handspun and handwoven in Assam. The production of these
drapes will be done by the rural khadi institutions which in turn offers them a boost in their livelihood as well as
encouragement to them to continue these heritage practices. It is expected of each participant at IIM Shillong to
carry and keep the “drape” for life and retain an element alongside a sense of belongingness to the Institute and
this corner of the Country.
