Unit 6 Systems of Equations and Inequalities

Graphing Two variable Inequalities

If the inequality sign is “less than”, the line is dashed

and shading occurs below the line.

𝑦𝑦 < 2𝑥𝑥 + 1

If the inequality sign is “less than or equal to,” the line

is solid and shading occurs below the line.

𝑦𝑦 ≤ 2𝑥𝑥 + 1

If the inequality sign is “greater than,” the line is

dashed and shading occurs above the line.

𝑦𝑦 > 2𝑥𝑥 + 1

If the inequality sign is “greater than or equal to,” the

line is solid and shading occurs above the line.

𝑦𝑦 ≥ 2𝑥𝑥 + 1

Example: Graph the solution of

• 𝑦𝑦 < 2𝑥𝑥 − 1
• 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 ≥ 0
• 𝑥𝑥 > −2

Graphing Systems of Inequalities

To solve a system of inequalities, you need to find the ordered pairs that satisfy all the
inequalities involved. One way to do this is to graph the inequalities on the same coordinate
plane. The solution set is represented by the intersection, or overlap, of the graph.

Example: Solve the system of inequalities by graphing

• 𝑦𝑦 < −𝑥𝑥 + 1; 𝑦𝑦 ≤ 2𝑥𝑥 + 3

• 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 < −1; 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 > 3
• 𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 ≤ 2; 3𝑥𝑥 + 4𝑦𝑦 ≤ 12; 𝑥𝑥 ≥ 0

Exercises

Solve the system of inequalities by graph

• 𝑥𝑥 ≥ 2; 𝑦𝑦 + 𝑥𝑥 ≤ 5
• 2𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 ≥ −4; −5𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 < 1
• 𝑦𝑦 ≤ 𝑥𝑥 + 3; 2𝑥𝑥 − 7𝑦𝑦 ≤ 4; 3𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 ≤ 6
