SECTION A

5. a. Ama’s age is two- thirds that of her elder sister. Four years ago, Ama’s age was half the sister’s age.
How old is her sister?

b. If 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝟓𝒙 − 𝟒) = 𝐥𝐨𝐠(𝒙 + 𝟏) + 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟒 , find the value of 𝒙.

Answer five questions only from this section. All questions carry equal marks.

6. In class of 60 students, 47 study mathematics, 33 study Mathematics and Physics, 31 study Mathematics
and Chemistry, 29 study Physics and Chemistry and 20 study all the three subjects. If the number of
students who study only Physics is equal to that of those who study only Chemistry.
a. Illustrate the given information in a Venn diagram.
b. Find the number of students who study;
i. Only Physics;
ii. Chemistry;
iii. Only one subject.

b. A shopkeeper gave a bill to a customer. The bill was in two digits but was mistakenly interchanged
thereby undercharging the customer by $45.00. If the sum of the digits is 9, find the actual value of
the bill.

7. a. A farmer uses 𝟓 of his land to grow cassava, 𝟑 of the remainder for yams and the rest for maize. If the
land used to grow maize is 𝟓𝟎 𝒎𝟐 , find the
i. fraction of land used to grow maize.
ii. Total land size
iii. area of land used to grow yam correct to two decimal places.

b. A boat is on the same horizontal level as the foot of a vertical tower. The angle of depression of
the boat from the top of the tower is 49°. If the boat is 30 m away from the foot of the tower;
i. Illustrate the information in a diagram.
ii. Find, correct to three significant figures, the height of the tower.
iii. If the boat moves further away to a new position, P and the initial angle of depression decreased
by 5°, calculate the distance moved by the boat from its initial position.

8. a. Copy and complete the table of values for the relation 𝒚 = 𝟒 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 , for −𝟒 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟒.

b. Using a scale of 𝟐 𝒄𝒎 to 𝟏 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝑡 on the 𝒙 − axis and 𝟐 𝒄𝒎 to 𝟓 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒔 on the 𝒚 − axis, draw

the graph for the relation 𝒚 = 𝟒 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙𝟐 for −𝟒 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟒.

c. Using the graph, find the;


i. equation of line of symmetry of the curve;
ii. maximum point of the curve;
iii. values of 𝑥 for which 𝑦 decreases as 𝑥 increases;
iv. values of 𝑥 for which 𝒚 ≥ 𝟎.

9. a. A bus has a petrol tank in the shape of a cylinder. The cylinder is 𝟏𝟐𝟓 𝒄𝒎 long and has a diameter
of 𝟒𝟐 𝒄𝒎.

i. How much will a full tank of petrol cost at the rate of 𝑮𝑯𝑪 𝟕. 𝟐𝟑 per litre? [ 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝝅 = ].

ii. If the bus uses petrol at the rate of 𝟏𝟐. 𝟐𝟓 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔 for every 𝟓𝟎 𝒌𝒎, how far can the bus travel on
a full tank of petrol?

b. The interior angle of a regular polygon is 𝒙°. If 𝒙° is 𝟗° less than the average of 𝟏𝟓𝟑° 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟏𝟒𝟓°,
find the number of sides of the polygon.

10. a. Two cars 𝐴 and 𝐵, 𝟏𝟖𝟎 𝒌𝒎 apart started a journey at the same time towards each other through the
same route. If the speed of 𝐴 is 𝒙 𝒌𝒎/𝒉 and that of 𝐵 is (𝒙 − 𝟐𝟎)𝒌𝒎/𝒉. Calculate the distance covered
by each car, just at where they met after 𝟗𝟎 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔.

b. Two boats 𝑄 and 𝑅 leave a port at the same time. 𝑄 travels at 𝟏𝟐 𝒌𝒎 on a bearing of 𝟎𝟐𝟎°, while 𝑅
travels at 𝟓 𝒌𝒎 on the bearing 𝟐𝟗𝟎°. Calculate, correct to two decimal places; the
i. Distance between 𝑄 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅;
ii. Bearing of 𝑄 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑅.
11. The table shows the distribution of the ages of students in a particular school.

12. a. A function, ℎ is defined by 𝒉: 𝒙 → 𝒑𝒙𝟐 + 𝒒𝒙 − 𝟐, where 𝑝 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑞 are constants. If the image of 1
is −𝟔 and that of 3 is −𝟏𝟐, find the values of 𝒑 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒒.

b. A two - digit number less than 30 is written down at random. Find the probability that a number
selected will be;
i. a prime number;
ii. an even number or a multiple of 3.

13. a. In the figure below, 𝑂 is the Centre of the circle. Given that ∠𝑩𝑶𝑫 = 𝟏𝟏𝟎° and 𝑫𝑬𝑭 is an isosceles

end of the third year.
