Chapter II Global

Issue

By T.Nana
1. Global

Warming
Burning of coal, oil and gas give us
energy, but produce CO2.

• CO2 act as a glass of the greenhouse.

• CO2 lets in the sunlight and heat and

prevent heat escaping back into space.
• Too much CO2 in atmosphere will make
the Earth too hot for living thing.

• We known as “Global warming”

• Summer would become hotter.

• Winter even colder.

1.2 Factor

increase CO2
Human being : cutting down trees for
building.

• Burning fuel such as coal, gas and oil.

• Plant and all other animal breathe out.

The amount of CO2
Plants absorb

photosynthesis

• Change global pattern of climate and

weather.
• Producing powerful storm, increase
rainfall and some place drought.
• Melting the icecap, sea level rising
Q.1 Name the factor that contribute to
the increased amount of CO2 in the
atmosphere?
Q.2 What is the function of CO2 in the
atmosphere?
Q.3 How will global warming affect our
environment?
2. Ozone

Depletion
Ozone made up of 3 oxygen atoms.

• Form a thin layer over the

stratosphere.

• At ground level, ozone is dangerous

to human health.
• Ozone layer absorb
most of the UV ray
from the sun.

• Act as the earth’s

sunscreen.
• In 1970, scientists discovered ozone
layer was being destroyed.

• The ozone layer over the pole become

sparse.

2.1 Effect of

The UV ray able to reach the earth

• Increase skin cancer and cataract in

human being.

• Interfere photosynthesis process.

• Damaging crops, plants and trees.

CFC
• The chemical used in aerosol spray,
refrigerator, air-con and foam product.

• Breakdown of ozone layer.

The reaction
of CFC
CFC Cl

Cl O3 O2

ClO O Cl
• Many countries are making laws to
reduce the use of product contain CFC.

• The Montreal Protocol aimed to reduce

the use of CFC.
Q.4 What is the function of ozone layer?
Q.5 Why is there a hole in it?
Q.6 What steps are being taken to
repair ozone
layer?
3. Acid

rain
CO2 in air dissolves in rain to form a
weak acid “carbonic acid”

• The burning of oil, coal produce

“nitrous oxide” and sulfur dioxide.

• These chemical combine with water

vapor and fall as acid rain.
Effect of

acid
Destroy trees.
rain
Kill aquatic animals

• Erode the stonework, building and

metal.
• Lake and river become too acidic for
living.
How to reduce

acid rain
Industrial should install a “scrubber” to
reduce sulfur in smoke.

• Vehicles should be fixed with catalytic

to reduce sulfur dioxide.

• Utilize fuel more cleanly and efficiently.
