Lesson Content
Introduce what we will learn today – The building blocks of artificial neural
network and the types of activation functions
Teaching topics: Discussion.
1) What are the building blocks of Artificial Neural Network (ANN)?
2) What are the types of activation functions in Artificial Neural Network
(ANN)?
Lesson activities: WB, Activity 5.1.3, Pg.10-11 / WB, Activity 5.1.4, Pg.12 / WB,
Activity 5.1.5, Pg.13 / WB
30min Briefly introduce the various types of activations function used in neural network
and how they are chosen for hidden and output layer accordingly. Encourage the
students to complete all the workbook activities (Activity 5.1.4 on WB, Pg.12 /
Activity 5.1.5 on WB, Pg.13 / optional: Activity 5.1.6 on WB, Pg.14) alongside to
get a better understanding of the topics.
During the lesson, use a range of AFL (Assessment for learning) techniques such
as asking questions, peer assessment, exit cards etc.

Teacher should use any scenarios or examples or any appropriate videos that will help
you to explain the topic.
Conclusion/revision
Summarize the lesson, recap the learning objectives and the key vocabulary used.
10 min Question students to assess progress against the learning objectives and
outcomes.
