REPORT(Group-1) Understanding Quality of Life of IIT Kharagpur Students

from Indic and Modern Approaches': Mixed Methods Group Members:
Atharva Patle-20BT30033 Himanshu Shekhar-20BT30010 Ajit Das-
20BT10005 Shreyansh Jha-20BT30010 Section 1: Self Journaling (Atharva
Patle) Introduction: In this section, we will discuss our own experiences
and development during the BTP. I’ll consider how what we've learned at
orientation and in-person sessions connects to the goals we set for
ourselves in the BTP. This self-journaling helps us understand our personal
development, the challenges we've faced, and the opportunities we've
spotted. This self-journaling is a way for us to assess ourselves and guide
our future actions. Class learning: Introduction: It has been a rewarding
experience for me to participate in person classes since they have allowed
me to explore my inner ideas and learn a lot about myself. Through yoga
and spiritual teachings, I've had the opportunity to dive into ancient
wisdom that goes beyond the ordinary and connects with the essence of
life. These classes have taught me important principles that go beyond just
what I study in college and really touch the core of who I am. In this self-
journaling entry, I explored deeper into the profound teachings and
practices that have most deeply touched me, with a focus on healthy
eating (Ahara vichara), restful sleep (Nidra), meditation (Dhyana), self-
discipline (Tapas), and improving my quality of life as a whole
(Svadhyaya). I embark on a deeper exploration of Ahara vichara, Nidra,
Dhyana, Tapas, and Svadhyaya, seeking to understand their significance in
my life and their integration into my BTP projects and beyond. Good Food
Habits (Ahara VICHARA): Ahara i.e. diet is believed to be one of the
Upastambha of life. Faulty diet results in disturbed functions of the body.
That is the reason why while describing causative factors of diseases,
dietary articles (apathya) have been given prime importance. Acharya
Charak has stated that diet sustains life if taken with discipline in a proper
manner. Ahara has a prime role in maintaining health and also in treating
various disorders. According to Acharya Kashyap, Ahara is considered as
the Maha Bhaishajya i.e. the great medicine. In our in-person classes, I've
come to appreciate the significance of Ahara Vichara, the yogic principle of
proper diet. It emphasizes the intake of Sattvic (pure), Rajasic
(passionate), and Tamasic (dull) foods, and the avoidance of processed,
junk foods. Choosing a Sattvic diet, rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and
whole grains, has not only enhanced my physical health but has also had a
profound effect on my mental clarity and emotional stability.By refraining
from chips and junk food, I've minimized the influx of Rajasic and Tamasic
qualities that agitate the mind. Quality of Sleep (Nidra): Sometimes, I
have found college to be a stressful experience, and because I now require
significantly more mental health care as a college student, mental health
issues have come to light. Sleep issues are widespread and have been
linked to worse mental health, even in young people and college students,
according to research. The significance of Nidra, or restful sleep, in yoga
and spiritual life has been highlighted in our classes. The restoration of the
body and mind while sleeping is crucial, just as we strive for balance
during the waking hours. Yoga's tenets of balancing the mind and body are
in line with practicing Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses) before bed and
keeping a regular sleep schedule. The word "Nidra" in Sanskrit represents
the divine art of peaceful sleep, giving me the peace I need to nurture my
spirit and advance on my spiritual path. This sacred sleep promotes self-
realization and awakens the "Kundalini Shakti" within by serving as a
conduit between the conscious and unconscious worlds. Meditation
(Dhyana) and Discipline (Tapas): The Latin root 'med', which means to
measure, is where the word meditation comes from. The current definition
is "to give close attention," "to measure," and "to reflect." The word for
meditation in Ayurveda or Sanskrit is "dhyana." Dhyana is used in yoga
exercises and leads to samadhi and self-knowledge. We have included
dhyana, or meditation, in all of our lessons. This method perfectly
embodies tapas, the yogic idea of self-control and dedication to one's
practice. My spiritual connection has grown stronger as a result of how
consistently and sincerely I practice meditation. In addition to promoting
inner tranquility, meditation offers a profound sense of Atman realization.
I've embraced a transformative path that transcends mental turbulence
(Vritti) and brings me nearer to the Purush, the true self, by cultivating
discipline in my daily practice. My college experience and daily life have
been greatly enhanced by the meditation (dhyana) and unwavering
discipline (tapas) practices, which echo the yogic traditions' wisdom. I have
developed inner strength and mindfulness by incorporating these holy
principles, which are akin to "Sadhana," the Sanskrit word for the path of
spiritual discipline. The 'Dharana' state is grounded in me thanks to
meditation, while the 'Tapas' of my soul's evolution are fueled by discipline.
Additionally, yoga breathing (pranayama) quickly brings me into the
present while blending my essence with 'Prana' -- the life force. Quality of
Life (Svadhyaya): My quality of life has noticeably improved as a result of
incorporating yogic and spiritual practices into my daily routine. The
principle of "Svadhyaya," a Sanskrit word that embodies the practice of
self-study and self-reflection, is deeply resonant with this profound
transformation. I've started a journey that acts as a mirror to my inner self
through the diligent practice of yoga and spirituality, which is similar to the
true meaning of "Yoga." In its purest form, yoga functions as a sacred
"Darpana" (mirror) to the inner self. I've awakened a heightened sense of
self-awareness through the practice of "Asana" (physical postures) and
"Pranayama" (breath control). This journey of self-discovery, reminiscent
of "Tapas" (discipline) and "Dhyana" (meditation), has not only improved
my physical and mental health, but has also fostered a profound
connection with my inner self. It's as if I've discovered the secrets of
"Samsara" (the cycle of existence), gaining insights that will lead me to a
more meaningful and fulfilling life. I am now better equipped to face life's
challenges with greater ease and purpose thanks to the process of self-
study, which has revealed hidden facets of my being. I've improved my
physical and mental health as well as my connection to my inner self by
incorporating these age-old principles, which has ultimately improved the
quality of my life. Challenges: It can be difficult to maintain a balanced diet
while juggling a demanding college schedule. The desire to maintain a
healthful diet frequently conflicts with the temptation of processed and
junk foods. It takes discipline to regularly choose healthy options over
unhealthy ones while resisting these temptations. Maintaining a regular
sleep schedule can be challenging in the college atmosphere, especially
with academic responsibilities and a busy social life. It may be necessary
to make changes to one's schedule to incorporate the practices of calm
sleep (Nidra) and sensation withdrawal (Pratyahara) before bed.
Distractions and a hectic schedule that are common in college life might
make it difficult to sustain a regular meditation practice. Daily meditation
and disciplined practices (Tapas) commitment may call for extra work and
time management. In college, balancing academic obligations, social
commitments, and personal development can be difficult. When juggling a
busy college schedule, the self- reflection journey (Svadhyaya) may
encounter difficulties. It might be challenging to balance these factors
while also improving quality of life. Conclusion: In-person classes on yoga
and spirituality have enriched my college experience, offering insights
beyond the typical curriculum. Exploring healthy habits like diet, sleep, and
meditation has transformed my perspective, though managing them
alongside academics requires discipline. Despite challenges, these ancient
teachings have deepened my self-awareness, highlighting the enduring
value of a balanced life. Committed to harmonizing academic goals with
spiritual growth, I continue to integrate these lessons for a richer life
experience. By Ajit Das Self Journaling It was a great learnings from 9
orientation classes through online mode. The classes focused on eating
healthily , getting enough sleep ,practising meditation (Dhyana), focus on
quality of life. Food Habits : Yoga encourages mindful eating and promotes
a sattvic diet, which is pure and balanced. This dietary approach includes
fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and foods that promote mental
clarity and physical health. Practicing yoga can make you more attuned to
your body's nutritional needs, leading to healthier food choices and better
digestion. Deep Sleep: Regular yoga practice, particularly relaxation
techniques like yoga nidra and meditation, can improve the quality of
sleep. Yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety, which are common culprits of
sleep disturbances. By calming the mind and relaxing the body, yoga
facilitates deeper, more restorative sleep. Meditation: Meditation is a
fundamental aspect of yoga. Through meditation practices, individuals can
achieve greater mental clarity, reduced stress, and improved focus.
Meditation enhances self-awareness and inner peace, allowing individuals
to connect with their inner selves and find a sense of calm amidst life's
challenges. Lifestyle: Yoga promotes a balanced and holistic lifestyle. It
encourages regular physical activity, stress management, and healthy
eating. The principles of yoga, such as ahimsa (non-violence) and satya
(truthfulness), guide individuals to lead ethical and harmonious lives. As a
result, yoga can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. Control
Over Emotions, Anger: Yoga practices, including asanas (physical postures)
and pranayama (breath control), help individuals gain control over their
emotions. Through conscious breathing and physical postures, yoga
teaches emotional regulation. By practicing regularly, individuals can
reduce anger, anxiety, and other negative emotions, fostering emotional
balance and resilience. Incorporating yoga into one's daily routine can lead
to positive changes in food habits, better sleep, enhanced meditation skills,
a balanced lifestyle, and improved emotional control. These benefits
contribute to an overall sense of well- being and a healthier, more
harmonious life. Challenges: Difficulty in concentration: Yoga often
requires focus and concentration, especially during meditation and
breathing exercises. It's natural for the mind to wander, but with practice,
you can improve concentration. Start with short meditation sessions and
gradually increase the duration as your focus improves. Lack of time :
initially finding time for regular yoga practice was challenging, especially
with a busy schedule. Start with short sessions, even just 10-15 minutes a
day, and gradually increasing the duration. Changes in food habits: Yoga
encourages mindful eating and promotes a sattvic diet, which is pure and
balanced.and initially it was difficult to changes fooding style new healthy
