ASL Distinctions
ASL has very unique grammar and syntax, which is different from English.
ASL is not a universal language—every country has its own unique sign language.
ASL does not have a written language; however, you’ll see written, or glossed, words on
your screen. Glossed letters are, for the most part, in capitol letters, indicating a specific
sign instead of the actual word.
ASL utilizes special symbols called grammar markers. Grammar markers communicate
what you are to do with your eyebrows and body as you sign.
Within ASL, there are regional differences, gender differences, and perhaps
generational differences between language users.
Learn and Master with Stacey Webb & Dr. Byron Bridges 3 Introduction
Learn & Master Sign Language
It’s important to recognize and learn to sign all of the vocabulary, numbers and
fingerspelled words in addition to passing the mastery quiz before moving on to the
next lesson. The lesson material is designed to build on previous lessons, so that’s why
mastering the material in each lesson is so important.
We encourage you to practice your new language skills by interacting with deaf
individuals. Learning a new language takes a great deal of courage and practice.
Go through this course with a partner to monitor sign production and for
encouragement.
If you’d like to see the sign production of each vocabulary word from two great
vantage points, find them at the vocabulary section on each DVD.

Fingerspelling Guidelines
• Don’t bounce your hand up and down and don’t let the hand appear lazy.
• Your palm orientation will be out, facing the person you are
communicating with.
• Fingerspelled words are commonly mouthed, but sometimes people
choose not to.
• It’s not how fast you fingerspell that matters. In time your speed will pick
up, but never put speed before clarity.

When signing the topic, your eyebrows are raised and your head is slightly
tilted forward.
The last sign of the topic is held a little longer than the other signs.
When signing the comment you must have the appropriate expression.
With yes/no questions your eyebrows are raised and your body and head lean forward.
With WH questions, your eyebrows are furrowed but your body and head still lean
forward. That is the big difference.

Sports Scores
The use of space is very important when talking about score. First, the team you
support is always near your chest. And the opposing team is in neutral space away
from your chest.
Next, the winning team is always signed first. This applies to the score throughout the
game, so you may be switching the teams back and forth if it’s a close game.

Designate the referent of a classifier. The signer should either fingerspell or sign the
referent before using the classifier.
Select the appropriate classifier. If talking about a house, do not use a classifier with a
3 handshape because that is an abstract representation of a motorized vehicle.
To make sure you are showing the size and shape specifiers appropriately, also
include the correct nonmanual signals. If showing something is small, remember to
make the ooo shape with your mouth.
The classifier should provide a real world visual experience. For example, most people
do not keep cups in a pull open drawer. Instead, give the representation of opening the
cabinet doors to take out the cup, therefore creating a better visual connection to the

Reiteration
In the world of ASL, the language naturally includes repetition, so reiteration is a
commonly used communication technique. You can reiterate information using a
sandwich structure. This means that you open with the message and close with the
same exact message.
So, how do you know what is important to reiterate? If your message is important, then
use reiteration. The goal is to reiterate something that is important to the storyline, has
cultural significance, or has high emotional impact to you, the signer. You will notice
that sometimes reiteration doesn’t happen directly at the beginning of the sentence

thereby increasing communication access within families, workplaces, schools, and the
communities where you live.
Although there are not enough pages to express my gratitude to each and every
Deaf person who has crossed my path, it is important that I mention a few names
specifically. It is with such joy that I thank those who first welcomed me into the Deaf
Community, who taught me their beautiful and rich language and culture. Clifton
Langdon-Grigg, Philip Castaneda, Ryan Sands, Jason Thrasher, Andrea Johnston, and
Katie McMahon, from the bottom of my heart I thank each of you. I would not be where
I am today if it were not for all of you.
I’d also like to acknowledge the educators and mentors who have guided, mentored,
