ASSIGNMENT #4

COULOMB’S LAW AND ELECTRIC FIELD

Problem solving. Show your solutions and box your final answers.

1.) Find E at P(1, 1, 1) caused by four identical 3 nC charges located at P1(1, 1, 0), P2(−1, 1, 0),
P3(−1,−1, 0), and P4(1,−1, 0)

2.) Two charges are placed on the x-axis: 3.0 𝜇𝐶 𝑎𝑡 𝑥 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 − 5.0 𝜇𝐶 𝑎𝑡 𝑥 = 40 𝑐𝑚. Where must
a third charge q be placed if the force it experiences is to be zero?

3.) A charge QA = −20μC is located at A(−6, 4, 7), and a charge QB = 50μC is at B(5, 8,−2) in free
space. Determine the vector force exerted on QA by QB.

4.) Point charges of 50 nC each are located at A(1,0,0), B( -1, 0, 0), C(0,1,0), and D(0, -
1, 0) in free space. Find the total force on the charge A.

5.) Refer to figure below. Disregard the differential length and imagine that the object is
part of a spherical shell. It may be described as 3 ≤ 𝑟 ≤ 5 , 60° ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 90° , 45° ≤ ∅ ≤
60° where surface r = 3 is the same as AEHD, surface 𝜃 = 60° is AEFB, and surface ∅ =
45° is ABCD. Calculate the following:
a.) the distance DH
b.) the distance FG
c.) the surface area AEHD
d.) the surface area ABDC
e.) the volume of the object

Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
