NATIONAL ARTIST IN LITERATURE

 Amado Vera Hernandez – known as “manunulat ng manggagawa”. The first king of balagtasan.
 Nicomedes “nick” Joaquin y Marquez – used the pen name “Quijano de Manila”. Exploration of
the Philippine colonial under Spain.
 Jose Garcia Villa – used the pen name “Doveglion”. The finest contemporary poet. Introduced
the reversal consonance and comma poems.
 Zacarias Eugene Francisco “Franz” Quino Arcellana – had a diseased called polio. Edited and
published Expression. 14 of his short stories were included in Jose Garcia Villa’s honor roll.
 Nestor Vicente Madali “NVM” Gonzales – literary luminary. Capture nuances of everyday life in
the Philippines.

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR FILM AND BROADCAST

 Lino Brocka – used “freedom and expression” in his works.


 Ishmael Bernal – so called Genius of the Philippine Cinema.
 Gerardo “manong” de Leon – most awarded film director in the history. Posthumously conferred
as a national artist shortly after his death.
 Eddie Sinco Romero – made over 20 films for international distribution and 35 filipino movies.
 Ronald Allan Kelley Poe “Fernando Poe Jr.) – legendary icon in Philippine Cinema. Has a
nickname “Da King”.
 Manuel Pabustan Urbano “Manuel Conde” – became the assistant director for sarswela film
entitled Giliw Ko of the LVN Pictures.
 Kidlat Tahimik “Eric Oteyza de Guia” – contributed to the development of Philippine
Independent Cinema. “Father of Philippine Independent Cinema”.
 Lamberto V. Avellana – was called “the boy wonder of the Philippine cinema”.

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN, AND ALLIED ARTS

 Pablo S. Antonio “Pablo Sebero Antonio” – pioneer of modern Philippine Architecture. Foremost
Filipino modernist architect of his time.
 Leandro V. Locsin – known for his use of concrete, floating volume, and simplistic design in his
various projects.
 Juan F. Nakpil – father of the Philippine architect. Hailed as the first national artist for
architecture.
 Ildefonso P. Santos Jr “Ildefonso Paez Santos Jr.” (IP Santos) – known as “Father of Philippine
Landscape Architecture”.
 Jose Maria V. Zaragoza – pillar of modern architecture in the Philippines. Service of GOD and
HUMANITY.

NATIONAL ARTIST FOR FASHION DESIGN

 Ramon Valera – first Filipino fashion designer. Innovation was modernizing the terno in 1939.
Revived the Traje de Mestiza. Introduced the use of zipper instead of hooks and the exclusion of
Panuelo.

GAMABA – Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan

 Another term for the National Living Treasures Award


 Established in April 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355
 Being conferred to Filipino Artists who practice preservation and promotion of nation’s
traditional arts.

TO BECOME A MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN, AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP CANDIDATE MUST:

 Possess a mastery of tools and materials needed for the traditional, folk art and be a maker of
works of extraordinary technical quality;
 Have consistently produced works of superior quality over significant period;
 Have engaged in a traditional and folk which has been in existence and documented for at least
fifty (50) years;
 Command respect and inspire admiration of the country with his character and integrity.
 Must have transferred and/or willing to transfer to other members of the community the skills in
the traditional and folk arts for which the community has become nationally known.
 However, a candidate who, due to age or infirmity, has left him/her/them incapable of teaching
further his/her/their craft, may still be recognized provided that he/she/they must possess the
qualifications as enumerated above.

FOR THE INDIVIDUAL AWARDEE:

 The rank and title of manlilikha ng bayan, as proclaimed by the president of the Philippines in
accordance with executive order No. 236 or Honors Code of the Philippines.
 The GAMABA gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and
citation;
 A lifetime emolument and materials and physical benefits comparable in value to those received
by the highest officers of the land such as;
1. A minimum cash award of two hundred thousand pesos (Php 200,000.00) net of taxes.
2. A minimum lifetime personal monthly stipend of fifty thousand pesos (Php 50,000.00).
3. Medical and hospitalization benefits exceeding Php 750,000.00 per year.
 A state funeral, the arrangements for and the expenses of which shall be borne by the
Government, upon the death of the manlilikha ng bayan; and
 A place of honor, in line with protocol precedence, in state functions, national commemoration
ceremonies and all other cultural presentations.

FOR THE GROUP AWARDEE

 The rank and title of manlilikha ng Bayan, as proclaimed by the president of the Philippines in
accordance with executive order No. 236 or honors code of the Philippines.
 The GAMABA plaque for the group;
 A one-time award of two hundred thousand pesos (Php 200,000.00), net of taxes;
 The group shall designate its leader who will represent and attend events amd functions on
behalf of the group. The said representative will also have a place of honor, in line with protocol
precedence, in state functions, national commemoration ceremonies and all other cultural
presentations.
