Differentiate Between Heat and Temperature at the

Molecular Level

1
HEAT AND TEMPERATURE

Introduction

Temperature and heat are usually used

interchangeably. Some people often interchange the use of
these terms in their daily conversation while others think that
these terms are just the same. But scientifically, heat and
temperature are two different concepts. In this module, you
will learn the difference between heat and temperature.

Differentiating heat and temperature is essential in

understanding some of the processes that happens in things
around us. Some phenomena can be understood and
explained better when you are equipped with knowledge and
concepts about heat and temperature.

Most Essential Learning

Competency & Objectives

In this module, you will learn how to Differentiate between heat and
temperature at the molecular level.

Specifically, you will learn to:

✓ Compare the movement of particles in varying temperature.
✓ Relate the kinetic energy (KE) of particles to temperature.
✓ Differentiate heat and temperature.

2

How did you find the test? Please check your

answers at the answer key section and see how you
did. Don’t worry if you got a low score, this just means
that there are more things that you can learn from this
module. So, go on and have a great time learning!

Learning Activities

ELICIT
You have learned in grade 7 that heat transfer
takes place between objects or places of different
temperatures, and that heat transfers from an object
of higher temperature to an object of lower
temperature. This time you will learn more about heat
transfer by exploring its effects on materials.
Try to recall the concepts about how heat is
being transferred by considering the situation on the
next page.

A hot boiled egg was served with you.
You want to eat it right away so you scooped
the egg with a spoon and put it in water. Few
minutes later, you noticed that the water turns
warm and the egg becomes a little colder. Why
is this so? Put a check ( / ) on the box of your
chosen answer.

The water absorbs heat from the

boiled egg
The temperature of the egg makes
the water cold
The heat escapes from the
environment

You already know that heat flows from an object

of higher temperature to an object of lower
temperature. This time you will learn more about heat
and temperature particularly the movement of the
particles and its kinetic energy as you go on with the
lesson.

EN G A G E
Study the concept cartoon on the next page
on heat and temperature. Analyze the given
situation and tell which idea you agree with. And
indicate your answer/reason on the space
provided.

Please take note of your idea/ answer about the
given situation. You can confirm your answers/ ideas
as you perform this activity.

EXPLORE
In this activity you will compare the movement
of particles in varying temperature and relate the
kinetic energy of particles to temperature. You will also
differentiate heat and temperature

Activity 1: Choco in Water

Materials needed:
3 cups

Tap water (water from the faucet)
Cold water

Procedure:
1. Fill the three cups separately with cold water, tap water and hot water
2. Put the chocolate powder of same amount in each cup
3. Carefully observe and compare the behavior of the chocolate powder in the
three cups. Write down your observations on the table provided.

Cup Temperature Observations

Cup A Hot
Cup B Tap (water at room temperature)
Cup C Cold

Guide Questions:
1. What can you say about the rate at which the chocolate powder dissolve in
each cup? Did the chocolate powder dissolve at the same rate in the 3 cups of
water? ________________________________________________________
2. In which cup did the chocolate powder dissolve fastest? In which cup did it
dissolve the slowest? _____________________________________________

7
3. How do you relate the temperature of water to the rate at which the chocolate
powder dissolve? ________________________________________________
4. In which cup do you think are the particles of water moving fastest? In which
cup are the particle moving slowest? Why? ____________________________
5. How would you compare the movement of particles in hot water and cold water?
______________________________________________________________
6. How would you relate the movement of particles to the kinetic energy of the
particles in hot water? In cold water? _________________________________
7. How is the kinetic energy of the particles to temperature? _________________

EX P L A I N
Take time to understand the following ideas or
concepts for you to confirm the results of the activities
you have performed.

The figure below shows two objects of different temperature. The white circles
represent particles in a hot object while the dark circles represent particles in a cold
object. The arrows indicate the movement of the particles.
HOT COLD HOT COLD HOT COLD

(a) The particles in a hot object move faster than the particles in the colder object.

(b) The two objects come in contact. When the two objects are in contact, fast-moving
molecules collide with slow-moving molecules causing the slow-moving molecules to
speed up and the fast-moving one to slow down.

(c) Heat flows from hotter to colder object causing the particles in the hot object to
slow down and the particles in the colder object to speed up. The molecules move at
the same speed, a state of thermal equilibrium.

8
How are heat, temperature and kinetic energy related?
If heat is added to an object, the particles of the object gain kinetic energy and
they move faster. Since temperature is directly related to kinetic energy, any gain in
kinetic energy would cause the temperature to increase. Conversely, if heat is
transferred or removed from an object, it loses kinetic energy, its particles move slower
and body’s temperature decreases.
What is the difference between heat and temperature?

Heat is the transfer of thermal energy (a substance cannot contain heat) whereas
Thermal Energy is the sum of the total energy of all particles in a substance.
Temperature is the measure of the average speed of these particles that make up the
substance.

Let’s revisit your response in concept
cartoon. We can now say that “Ugen” has the right
answer because the higher the temperature that
faster the movement of particles thus chocolate
powder will be dissolved fastest in hot water.

EL A B OR A TE
Try to apply the ideas/ concepts you’ve
learned about heat and temperature into this
situation

Joshua attended a birthday party. He saw

someone preparing a juice. He observed that the
powdered juice is dissolved in water. He added ice after
the juice is completely dissolved in the water.

Why is it better to dissolve first the juice in the

water before adding ice on it?

I agree with the idea of Ugen that the chocolate powder will dissolve
fastest in hot water and slowest in cold water because the higher the
temperature the faster the movement of particles thus chocolate powder will be
dissolved fastest in hot water.

Explore: Choco in Water

1. The rate of dissolution of chocolate powder in each cup differs from each other.
2. Hot water. Cold water
3. The higher the temperature of the water, the faster the rate of chocolate powder
to dissolve
4. The particles are moving fastest in the cup A with hot water. The particles are
moving slowest in the cup C with cold water. This is because the higher the
temperature the faster the movement of particles.
5. The particles in hot water are moving faster compared to particles in cold water.
6. The particles in hot water has higher kinetic energy. The particles in cold water
has lower kinetic energy.
7. The higher the temperature, the greater the kinetic energy of the particles.

15
Elaborate:

It is better to dissolve first the juice powder in tap water before adding
ice on it because the higher the temperature of water the faster the movement
of particles thus the juice dissolve faster since tap water has higher temperature
compared to ice.
