 What is power distribution:-

 Electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electricity.

Electricity is carried from the transmission system to individual consumers.
Distribution substations connect to the transmission system and lower the
transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV and 33 kV
with the use of transformers.
 Primary distribution lines carry this medium voltage power to distribution
transformers located near the customer’s premises. Distribution
transformers again lower the voltage to the utilization voltage used by
lighting, industrial equipment and household appliances. Often several
customers are supplied from one transformer through secondary
distribution lines.
 Commercial and residential customers are connected to the secondary
distribution lines through service drops. Customers demanding a much
larger amount of power may be connected directly to the primary
distribution level or the sub transmission level

 Introduction to Torrent power distribution limited (TPDL):-

 The Torrent Power is an integrated power utility involved in the generation,

transmission, and distribution of electricity. Here’s a brief history of Torrent
Power’s distribution segment:
 Formation: Torrent Power was established in 2004 when the Ahmedabad
Electricity Company (AEC) was acquired by the Torrent Group, And in 1997
Surat distribution is takeover by TPDL. And now supply quality power with

99.9 % reliability to the 38 lacs consumer all over the India and 6.2 lacs
consumer in Surat.
 Expansion: After the acquisition, Torrent Power expanded its distribution
network to various cities in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Surat, and
Gandhinagar.
 Tariff and Regulation: Over the years, Torrent Power has been regulated by
the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) for its distribution
activities, ensuring that tariffs and service standards are in line with
regulatory guidelines.
 Performance: Torrent Power has been focusing on modernizing its
distribution infrastructure, improving efficiency, and enhancing customer
service. The company has also been involved in various initiatives to
promote renewable energy and energy conservation.
 Recent Developments: in January 2022, Torrent Power continued to
strengthen its distribution network and explore opportunities for growth,
both within Gujarat and potentially in other states in India.

 Various departments of TPDL:-

 Distribution :-
o LV distribution:-
 Outage management:- An outage management system (OMS) is a utility
network management software application that models network topology
for safe, efficient field operations related to outage restoration.
 This department handling the complaint of the customer and answering
them and solving their Problems as soon as possible.

 Condition base monitoring (CBM):- This department inspect and monitor

the meter of the torrent asset which is located at public domain or in area
as per the schedule of inspection.

 Breakdown & Routine improvement:- This department performed on a

piece of equipment that has broken down, faulted, or otherwise cannot be
operated.
 Equipment routine maintenance and breakdown of equipment is done in
torrent workshop located at workplace

o EHV distribution:-
 There are HV cable, HV workshop, HV PQC (Power Quality Cell), HV
substation are of the sub department.
 There are Six 220kV lines comes from Sugen and connect with Bhatar, Puna
and Ved substations. There are two 220kV lines connect with each
substation.
 There is one 220kV lines from Bhatar, Ved and Puna are directly connected
with CGIS Substation.
 So here CGIS connected with all three substation and its work as ring main
unit system.
 Now 220kV power step down to 66kV at substations and transmit it for
66kV consumers and also 66kV power step down to 11kV and transmit to
different substations which have Distribution transformer that convert 11kV
to 415V and that 415V supply distributed to different consumers in Surat.
 There is total 3000 plus Distribution transformer installed in Surat by
Torrent Power.

 There are at CGIS station, there are a total of 8 transformers with different
ratings.
o 2 ICT – 220/66 kV
o 6 Transformer – 66/11 kV (40MVA and 25 MVA)

o 1 Variable Shunt Reactor (120 mVAR)

 Also, at that station, there are two GIS. One is 220 kV GIS, and one is 66 kV.

 Customer Service Department :-

 There are validation & billing section, printing, bill complaint section-
annual check machine section are exist, all these sub department combine
make custom support department.
 Torrent power created one application for their customers named ‘Torrent
Power Connect’.
 In this app customer do complain for meter or any other problem they
faced in Torrent services.
 So, if one customer complains on any problem than customer service
department first check that complain and handover to respected
department who solve that issue.
 Also, in this application customer pay their bill and get some extra facilities
like new meter installation or something else.
 Also, customer care number is available for customer for 24*7.
 If customer calls on that number than first that call taken care by
Ahmedabad service center and it’s diverted to respected service Centre.
 If customer complaining for sudden power cut in their area than Torrent
Power Engineer reach out in that area with 2 technicians only in 30 minutes
of time.
 If problem is not done by on field team than it’s further carry forward to
respected department.

 Meter management department:-

 This department is located at Vastadevdi Station Katargam.

 In this department all new meter testing is done.
 Here Class 1(CL1) meter testing to be done using CL 0.02 master meter.
 Here accuracy test, IR test, Meter constant test, Metering consumption,
Harmonics test to be done in meter testing laboratory.
 This all test to be done using master meter having higher accuracy than
standard meter.
 And master meter inspection to be done in range of 1 year.

 Vastadevdi Station also have Meter scraping department. In this

department all faulty, damaged and corrosive meters are scraped.

 Variable shunt reactor:-

 Variable shunt reactors are used in high voltage energy transmission

systems to stabilize the voltage during load variations.
 A traditional shunt reactor which is used in Sugen has a fixed rating and is
either connected to the power line all the time or switched in and out
depending on the load but the rating of a VSR can be changed in steps.
 The VSR can continuously compensate reactive power as the load varies
and thereby stabilize the voltage.
 We show VSR at Surat distribution CGIS (Ring Road) station.
 That VSR has a rating of 120 mVAR.
 In night time when load goes down then reactive power decreases so at
that time VSR is compensate that reactive power and stabilize the voltage
during low load. Which
 Means VSR absorb the reactive power and stabilize the voltage.
