MATHEMATICS
GRADE 9
DATE: ……………………………………….
TOPIC: Patterns (Numerical and Geometric)
CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED:
By the end of the lesson learners should know and be able to:
• Investigate and extend numeric and geometric patterns looking for relationships between
numbers, including patterns:
- represented in physical or diagram form
- not limited to sequences involving a constant difference or ratio
- of learners own creation
- represented in tables
- represented algebraically
• Describe and justify rules for observed relationships between numbers in own words or in
algebraic language

1. Determine the value of a and b in the sequence and describe the sequence.
(The same value can be added, subtracted, multiplied, divided or a combination of
calculations to form a number pattern or sequence)
Example: 2; 8; 14; a ; b
Answer: 2; 8; 14; 20; 26 (ADD 6)

2. Determine the first three terms of the following rows with general terms, Tn = …
Example: -3n + 8 which means it is -3 × n + 8
Answer : Tn = - 3n + 8 (Substitute n to form a number pattern from a general term or rule)
(1st TERM) T1 = - 3 (1) + 8 = -3 + 8 = 5 -2
(2nd TERM) T2 = - 3 (2) + 8 = - 6 + 8 = 3 ADD -2 TO TERM VALUE

IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:
• The same value can be added, subtracted, multiplied, divided or a
combination of calculations to form a number pattern
• T5 refers to the terms’ position; etc 5th Term
• Tn refers to the general term or rule or nth Term – It can be used to determine
any terms position value. In general the relationship between the value of a
term and its position in the sequence are determined to find the general term
• The different methods to be used when a number pattern has a constant or
common difference. If you are successful with the method that you have learned in
class, please continue with that method.
