BSCOE 1-3

MODULE 3
ASSESSMENT

Tasks:
1. Give your own observation on the idea that Philippines is a disaster-prone country. Do
you agree with this or not?
 I agree with the fact that Philippine is a disaster – prone country because of its
geographical location in Southeast Asia. Natural disasters such as typhoons,
earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and fires affect the country.
Philippines belong to the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region around much of the rim of the
Pacific Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. Volcanic eruptions
and tsunamis are related to the continental plate activity around “the Ring of Fire”.
Another reason why Philippines is prone to disaster are because of social and economic
state of our country. The social and economic cost of natural disasters in the country is
increasing due to population growth, change in land-use patterns, migration, unplanned
urbanization, environmental degradation, and global climate change.

2. Explain the difference between a hazard and a disaster. Give specific examples.
 Even though the two names are sometimes used synonymously, they are not the same.
A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm, while a disaster is the actual
occurrence of harm caused by a hazard. For example, an earthquake is a hazard, while
the destruction of buildings and loss of lives caused by an earthquake is a disaster.

3. What makes a society vulnerable from disasters and hazards?

 A society can be vulnerable to disasters and hazards due to various factors such as
poverty, limited access to medical services, corruption, and environmental degradation.
These factors can exacerbate the impact of disasters and make it difficult for
communities to recover.

4. Among the four priority areas of the DRRM, what should be given the most attention
and why?
 Disaster preparedness must be given the most attention in Disaster Risk Reduction
Management because it is about the preparation that everyone must undergo or must
know. Disaster preparedness may give awareness to the people to be prepared anytime.
It increases the level of awareness of the people to the impacts of hazard and risks.
Government and non - government officials prepared plans and policies about disaster
preparedness in the localities, and they offer some free training and seminars to the
locality.

5. Among all the disasters presented, what do you think is the most difficult to prevents?
Expound on your answer.
 Among all the disasters presented, it can be argued that earthquakes are the most
difficult to prevent. This is because earthquakes are caused by natural phenomena that
are beyond human control. However, it is possible to reduce the impact of earthquakes
through measures such as building earthquake-resistant structures and conducting
earthquake drills to prepare communities for such disasters.
