GROUP-4: PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES FOR YOUR SAFETY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER EARTHQUAKE

What Precautionary Measures?

Precautionary measures refer to steps or actions taken in advance to prevent potential harm, reduce risks, or
mitigate the impact of possible adverse events. These measures are implemented to safeguard individuals,
communities, or systems from potential dangers or negative consequences.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and seismology (PHIVOLCS) is closely monitoring seismic activities and
volcanic activities. It is also in close monitor with other stations around the world for tsunami warnings.

Earthquakes cannot be prevented. However, people can minimize damages if they know what to do before,
during, and after an earthquake. Lives could be safeguarded if they practice safety precautions.

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

1. Know the Tsunami Risk

• Be aware of the tsunami risk in your coastal area. Know the designated tsunami evacuation routes.

2. Educate Residents

• Educate residents about the signs of a tsunami and the appropriate response.
• Conduct regular tsunami drills in addition to earthquake drills.

3. Evacuation Plans

• Establish clear and well-communicated evacuation plans. Designate safe evacuation areas on higher ground.

4. Emergency Kits

• Prepare emergency kits that include essentials such as water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies,
flashlight, and extra batteries.

5. Secure Coastal Structures

• Ensure that coastal structures are built and maintained to withstand earthquakes and potential tsunamis.

6. Stay Informed

• Stay informed about earthquake and tsunami alerts through local authorities and emergency services.
DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

1. Immediate Evacuation

• If you are in a coastal area and feel the ground shake for an extended period or receive a tsunami warning,
evacuate immediately to higher ground.

2. Avoid the Shoreline

• Move away from the shoreline, beaches, and low-lying coastal areas as quickly as possible.

AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE

1.Tsunami Alert

• Remain vigilant for potential tsunami alerts even after the earthquake stops.

2. Evacuation

• Stay at the designated evacuation area until authorities confirm it is safe to return.

3. Check for Hazards

• After the earthquake and possible tsunami, be cautious of debris, damaged structures, and other hazards.

4. Listen for Updates

• Listen to emergency radios or official announcements for updates and instructions.

5. Assist Others

• Help neighbors and community members, especially those who may need assistance during evacuation and
recovery.

6. Avoid the Coast

• Avoid returning to the coastal area until authorities declare it safe to do so.

7. Report Damages

• Report damages, injuries, or incidents to emergency services.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER EARTHQUAKE INSIDE THE MALL

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE

1. Emergency Plans

• Ensure that the mall has well-established emergency plans, including evacuation routes and assembly points.
• Conduct regular drills to familiarize employees and shoppers with evacuation procedures.

2. Evacuation Signs

• Clearly mark evacuation routes and exits with visible signs throughout the mall.
