(Attempt any six questions from Part A and Part B is compulsary)

Q1. A close coil helical spring has stiffness 10 N/mm. Its length when fully compressed, with 7
adjacent coils touching each other is 40 cm. The modulus of rigidity of the material of the
spring is 0.8 × 105 N/mm2.
i) Determine the wire diameter and mean coil diameter if their ratio is 0.1.
ii) If the gap between any two adjacent coils is 0.2 cm, what maximum load can be
applied before the spring becomes solid, i.e. adjacent coil touch?
iii) What is the maximum shear stress in the spring?
Q2. A horizontal beam 10 m long is carrying uniformly distributed load of 1 kN/m. The beam 7
is supported on two supports 6m apart. Find the position of the supports, so that bending
moment on the beam is as small as possible.

Also draw the shear force diagram and bending moment diagram.

Q3. An overhung shaft supported at two bearing „A‟ and „B‟ carries UDL of 10 N/mm over
700 mm its length as shown in figure. A belt driven pulley „P‟ is keyed to the shaft at its
right end. The load carried by pulley is shown in the following figure. The shaft is required
to transmit 50 kW power at 600 RPM.
Material properties for shaft material are:
Sut = 770 N/mm2
Syt = 580 N/mm2
Using ASME code of shaft design determine the following:
a) Calculate and Draw Total Bending moment diagram of shaft
b) Calculate the diameter of shaft (kb = 1.5 & kt = 1.0)

Q 4. A bracket subjected to load “P” is bolted to a wall as shown in figure below. Taking factor 7
of safety as 5 and Ssy = 200 N/mm2 for bolt material, calculate the size of bolts.(Assume
Maximum shear stress theory)

Q.5 A 1.5-inch round bar has been machined from AISI 1050 cold drawn round bar. This part 7
is to withstand a fluctuating tensile load varying from 0 to 16 kip*. Because of the design
of the ends and the fillet radius, a fatigue stress-concentration factor of 1.85 exists. The
remaining Marin factors have been worked out, and are ka=0.797, kb=kd=1, and kc=0.923.
Find the factor of safety using the Goodman interaction line.

*1 Kips = 4.4482 Kilonewtons

Q. 6 A power screw with 30 mm diameter and 6 mm pitch double threaded square screw is used 7
to raise a load of 10 kN. A plane thrust collar of 50 mm mean diameter is used. The
coefficient of friction are 0.15 and 0.1 for thread and collar respectively. Assume 38% of
load is taken by first engaged thread.
i) Determine the efficiency.
ii)Determine the key stresses and the corresponding principal stress (normal and shear)
also determine the von Mises stress and maximum shear stress at the root of the thread.
iii) Repeat part (ii) for Acme threads.

Q. 7 In a bolted assembly, the bolt is subjected to a preload of 15 kN. The assembly is subjected 7
to force which varies from 0 - 12 kN. The stiffness of the parts joined is 2 times stiffness of
the bolt.

Determine the size of the bolt assuming fine threads. Following data is given for the bolts:
Sut = 700 MPa, Syt = 500 MPa, E = 207 GPa. Endurance limit in bending = 200 MPa,
fatigue stress concentration factor = 2.4, f.o.s. = 2 and expected reliability is 95 %.

Also find the factor of safety considering Gerber criterion.

Compulsory Question (Part B)

Q.8 Two shafts AB and CD made of different materials and connected together at B while two 8
extreme ends are attached to rigid support. The dimensions of the geometry have shown in
the subsequent figure. A torque of 20000 N-cm is applied at the junction of two shafts.
Compute the maximum shearing stresses in the shaft AB and CD. What is the twisting
angle at location B? Assume modulus of elasticity for shaft AB as EAl=0.3 × 105 N/mm2
and for CD as Est= 0.9 × 105 N/mm2.
