2. Operation
sc
di
re
A. In Icing Conditions
ed
(1) On flights made in icing conditions, the pneumatic de-icer boot is used to remove
riz
ho
any ice that has formed in areas of the leading edge that may interfere with the
ut
flight of the aircraft.
na
-U
(2) The ice is removed by mechanical action in three stages:
ly
(a) To break the layer of ice into fragments.
on
(b) To give a shearing force greater than the ice adhesion on the de-icer boot.
e
us
(c) To carry away the fragments of ice by scavenging effect of air stream.
ed
iz
(3) The first two stages are got by inflation with air of the rubber tubes on the outer
or
surface of the de-icer boot.
th
au
B. In non-icing conditions n
ow
(1) The purpose of the de-icer boot is to keep the aerodynamic profile of the leading
ts
ri
edge.
fo
(2) The tubes are kept flat by the continuous vacuum effect of the de-icer boot.
a
en
at
C. Recommendations to users
rS
fo
(1) De-icing equipment requires a minimum quantity of maintenance during the period
m
of use.
co
a.
(2) De-icer boots are exposed to severe abrasion due to sand and adverse weather
en
conditions. But experience has shown that most frequent damage results less from
t
sa
natural causes than from carelessness when installing and removing the de-icers
a@
and while the aircraft is grounded, i.e. scratches and tears made during servicing.
ic
Such damage will be prevented by the use of soft lagging on ladders and platforms
cn
te
(1) The de-icer boot outer surface has good resistance against weathering (ultraviolet

(2) However, the surface may suffer slight adverse effects from engine oil and greasy
