CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT LEARNING ACTIVITY (CALA)

CALA in Geography: This is any learning activity or assessment that requires learners
to perform, demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Geography.
Continuous Assessment Learning Activity yields a tangible product and/or performance that
serve as evidence of learning and presents a situation that calls for learners to apply their learning
in context. Pathway research project: A detailed study venture done by a learner in a chosen
career area in this case Transport Systems is key.

TOPIC 1- TRANSPORT SYSTEMS.

There is need for a teacher to provide a Geography CALA Guide on Transport Systems.
This should be guided by the syllabus.

Topic: Transport Systems- being clearly articulated.
Concepts/ Skills: related to the specific topics clearly provided.
Dimensions/ Criteria to be assessed: scope of related content should be available.
Objectives to be assessed: related to the skills being assessed propounded.
CALA Context: give the context and background of the problem to be solved.

LEARNING AREA : GEOGRAPHY
TOPIC : TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
BACKGROUND; In Zimbabwe, an increase in population and the number of motor vehicles, a
deteriorating transport infrastructure, severe congestion, an inefficient public transport and a high
rate of accidents has been experienced recently. ZUPCO has been the major service provider of
ferrying people from one point to the other; after the banning of private service providers amid
covid-19 pandemic. It is common to see vehicles doing school runs, carrying learners beyond
vehicle’s full capacity. Children who commute to and from school are facing transport
challenges. Parents and guardians are also facing challenges when doing their errands. Many
factors can affect travel demand, including demographics, the quality of facilities, the quality and
price of alternatives, and land use patterns. Ineffective transport system can be a strain mentally,
emotionally, financially and emotionally.

ACTIVITIES
PART A.
 Identify mode of transport being used in your area. (3)
 Outline the effects of transport systems in your area paying particular attention to
learners. (5)
 Suggest strategies the government can adopt to improve transport problems in your area
if any. (7)
PART B.
 Write a report to the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Infrastructural
Development (Zimbabwe), on the issues of Transport Systems in your area.
Acknowledge positive findings, and highlight challenges being encountered, suggesting
possible solutions. (15)

 How the learner will be assessed:


 Will be assessed through a Marking Guide covering all the aspects in Part A and
Part B.
 Achievements Standards –these are descriptions of the expected qualities of a
learner’s work that provide a basis for judging how well the learner has
demonstrated that they know, understand and can do
