Title: Reading and Writing Music
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning at home. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included
in the module.

For the learner:


As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different activities
in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be reminded of
the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part
of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.

Let Us Learn
Have you tried singing your own melody? Or have you tried humming
a tune out of nowhere?

In this module, you will know how to sing notes on the staff, familiarize
yourself with the different intervals and sing your own simple composition.

And we will focus our learning objectives with the following:

1. Read correct placement of notes or pitch on the staff


2. Differentiate the kinds of intervals
3. Sing self-composed melodies

Activity 1

Instruction: Identify the so-fa syllables on the staff of the song Bahay Kubo
and sing it by saying the notes or the so-fa syllables. You may use a keyboard
if it is available or you may download any piano app in your mobile phone to
have accurate tone/pitch.

completing them, sing the combination of intervals that you just completed.

Unison interval - third interval - octave interval - fifth interval - octave (mi as
the root) interval - unison interval (sol) – second interval (sol as the root) –
unison interval (higher do as the root)

Let Us Practice More

Instruction: Get a pencil with eraser and write/compose your own music by
combining the different intervals on the staff. You will have time signature,
which means there are four beats in every measure. You can make at least
four measures as a start. And when you’re done, sing your song. God bless
you!

Remember to use your notes with correct beats: whole note – 4 beats, half
note – 2 beats, quarter note – 1 beat, and eighth note – ½ beat. ☺ I’ll show
you with this example:

Let Us Remember

1. Interval is the distance between two pitches/tones. A succession of


tones in varied intervals is called melodic progression. The following are the
kinds of melodic intervals.

The following are the Kinds of Intervals. Study and analyze them. Each

interval has its name. They are:

Unison/Prime - (Do to Do), Fifth - (Do to Sol),

Second - (Do to Re), Sixth - (Do to La),

Third - (Do to Mi), Seventh - (Do to Ti) and

Fourth - (Do to Fa), Octave – (Do to higher do).

2. A song is a combination of intervals. The folk song Bahay Kubo is an
example of a combination of intervals.

3. One way one can create or compose a song is by combining the different
intervals.

4.The difference of the intervals is they differ in distance and combination of


notes. You will know their difference when you sing each interval.

The song Bahay Kubo is a combination of intervals, too. Observe the notes of
the song.

Combining intervals to make a simple song. Observe the notes below and the

are combinations of intervals, as well.
