THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

This purpose of this quantitative research study is to explore the effect of

Facebook usage on the academic performance of senior high school students.
With the increasing popularity of social media there is a growing concern among
educators and parents about the impact of Facebook usage on student’s academic
performance. This study aims to investigate the relationship between Facebook
usage academic performance, as well as the factors that influence this
relationship.
The study will involve collecting data from senior high school students
who use Facebook regularly and analyzing their academic performance. This will
include examining their grades, attendance, and other academic indicators. The
study will also collect data on the students’ Facebook usage habits, such as the
amount of time they spend on the platforms, the types of activities they engage
in, and the strategies they use to manage their Facebook use.
The data collected will be analyzed using quantitative methods, such as
statistical analysis and regression analysis, to determine the relationship between
Facebook usage and academic performance. The study aims to provide insights
into the effects of social media on student learning and inform educators and
parents about how to support students in managing their social media use.
Overall, this study is important because it addresses a growing concern
among educators and parents about the impact of social media on students
learning. By exploring the effects of Facebook usage on academic performance,
this study aims to provide valuable insight into how social media use can be
managed to support student’s success.
1
Background of the study

Facebook has become a popular social networking platform, especially

among teenagers and young adults. With its widespread use, concerns have been
raised about the potential impact of excessive Facebook usage academic
performance. Senior high school student, in particular, are at a crucial stage of
their education where maintaining good academics performance is essential for
their future prospects.

The background of the study would highlight the importance of

understanding the relationship between Facebook usage and academic
performance among senior high school students. It may discuss previous research
findings, which could mixed or inconclusive, leading to the need for further
investigation. The background would emphasize the significance of this research
in contributing to the existing body of knowledge and providing insights for
educators’, parents, and policymakers.

By conducting a quantitative research study, researchers can gather

empirical data to examine the potential effects of Facebook usage on academic
performance. This type of study would involve collecting numerical data through
surveys or other quantitative methods to analyze the relationship between
Facebook usage patterns and academic outcomes, such as grades, test scores, and
study habits.

Overall, the background of the study would aim to provide a clear context for the
research, justify it’s significance, and highlight the need for further investigation
into the impact of Facebook usage on the academic performance of senior high
school students.
2

Objective of the study

This study aims to explore the effect of facebook on the

academic performance of SHS students.

Research questions
1. What time of the day do the respondents spend on facebook?
2. How long the respondents use facebook?
3. What is the academic performance of the respondents?

4. Average grade of all subject that taken in first semester?

3

Hypothesis

The amount of time spent on Facebook is negatively correlated with academic

performance among senior high school students.
In this hypothesis, the descriptive variable is the amount of time spent on
Facebook, which is used to describe the behavior or characteristic being studied. The
hypothesis suggests that there is a negative relationship between Facebook usage and
academic performance, implying that as the amount of time spent on Facebook
increases, academic performance decreases.
To test this hypothesis, researchers would collect data on the amount of time
students spend on Facebook and their corresponding academic performance measures,
such as grades or test scores. Statistical analysis can then be conducted to determine if
there is a significant correlation between Facebook usage and academic performance.
It's worth noting that this hypothesis assumes a negative relationship between
Facebook usage and academic performance. However, the actual findings of the study
may support or reject this hypothesis, leading to further insights and conclusions about
the effects of Facebook on academic performance among senior high school students.

The study aims to determine the efficacy of Exploring

the effect of Facebook usage on academic performing
among senior high school students. This hope to benefits
the following

Further research: It could provide a foundation for

further research into the impacts of social media usage
on academic performance, mental health, and other
aspects of student life.
Parental guidance: parents could use the information to
monitor and guide their children’s Facebook usage,
balancing it with their academic commitments.
Students awareness: The study could also help students
themselves understand the potential impacts of excessive
Facebook usage on their academic performance,
encouraging them to manage their more effectively.
Understanding impact on learning: By examining the
relationship between Facebook usage an academic
outcomes the study helps to shed light on the potential
influence of social media on students’ educational
achievements.
5
Scope and Limitation

This research will investigate how the amount of time spent on Facebook
and the activities engaged in on the platform of students at the senior high school
level. The study will aim to identify any correlations or associations between
Facebook usage academic success.

The research will only focus on senior high school students only may not
generalize to other age groups or educational levels.

Definition of terms

Facebook usage: This refers to how often and in what manner senior
high school students are using Facebook.
Academic performance: This refers to how well students are doing in
their school work.
Senior high school students: This term refers to student’s who are in
the later years of their secondary education, typically around ages 16-
18. The exact ages can vary depending on the country and specific
education system.
Exploring the effects: this phrase suggests that the study is looking to
understand the impact or consequences of Facebook usage on academic
performance.

Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATEDLITERATURE

According to Samia Nadeem (2021): This review investigates the impact

of Facebook usage on the academic performance of university students. It
highlights both positive and negative effects of Facebook on academic
performance. The review suggests that despite the variance of findings, the
overall outcome is negative when it comes to the use of Facebook in academic
performance.

This study reviews the international literature on using Facebook for

academic purposes. by Pinaki Chakraborty (2021) It examines the positive effects
of using Facebook for academic communication and promoting student-centered
learning. However, it also highlights the need for more in-depth research on the
quality of learning outcomes and the suitability of Facebook for different
disciplines.
According to an article in Effects of Using Facebook on Academic
Performance of Students: A Review (2020): This review explores the effects of
using Facebook on the academic performance of students. It discusses the impact
of Facebook usage on students' study time, engagement, and relationships with
teachers. The review suggests that there is a need for further research to
understand the complex relationship between Facebook usage and academic
performance.
This study examines the impact of Facebook usage on academic
performance. It discusses the positive and negative effects of Facebook on
students' study habits, time management, and engagement. The study suggests
that excessive Facebook usage can have a detrimental effect on academic
performance. By Sedigheh Moghavvemi,(2017)

researcher conducted the study, which it gives the
opportunity to distinguish on the respondents, who use
Facebook and how it’s affected to the academic
performance of the students on their academic situation.
Research Instrument

Survey the researcher collect all the method in

information from a pool of respondents by asking multiple
survey. questionnaire use a checklist question so that the
respondents will easily answers the following questions
from the researcher.

Data Collection Procedure

First, we need to identify our target population, which in this case

in senior high school students, we can use a random sampling method
to ensure that every student has an equal chance of being selected for
the study. This will helps to make our finding more generalizable.
Next, well design a survey to collect data on students Facebook usage
and academic performance. The survey could include question about
how often they use Facebook, what they use it for, how much time they
spent on it and their grades. Once the survey is ready, well distribute it
to the student in our sample. Depending on what most convenient for
the students, well need to ensure that the student understand the
purpose of the study and that their responses will be kept confidential.

After the survey are turned, well enter the data into a statistical
software program for analysis, well need to check the data for any
errors for inconsistencies and clean it if necessary. Finally, well analyze
the data to see if there are any patterns or relationship between
Facebook usage, academic performance, and social interaction. This
could include running statistical tests, creating graphs, or calculating
average.
