Dr. Jett
Chicago Police Supervisor Quits Amid Probe into Racist, Incendiary Social Media Posts.
Lt. Cannon made numerous racial and incendiary comments on his Facebook account and
falsely claimed it had been hacked. He served as a watch commander of the Near North Police
District and he took the an oath to protect and serve, including Muslims, African-Americans,
Hispanics, Asian Americans, the LGBTQ community, and women.” The COPA report stated that
“Through his use of social media, Lt Cannon has demonstrated that he is unable to treat all the
citizens of Chicago with fairness and equity.” The director of the Chicago Police Board stated
that his allegations were never referred to the board, which rules on serious police disciplinary
cases. There were 19 allegations related to his social media posts, 16 of which were sustained.
One post framed firefighters as “homosexuals” and another stated that President Barack “Obama
is Isis”, with an edited photo of him wearing a hijab. He also responded to camera footage of a
fatal police shooting of Harith Augustus, whose death started protests and unrest, and he said
“Brave young warriors face to face with an urban terrorist and the better trained professional
Police Officer won the day, Excellent work by all the new batch of warriors. Love it.”
Questions: Should police officers or police officials receive more intense training about using an
unbias mindset in and out of the work field? Also, how can we cause attention to the police force
being biased?
