Guide Questions:

16. What does the water inside the jar represent?

 It represents the blood.

17. How will you compare the heart pump model and the human heart?
 The heart pump model is similar to the human heart in such a way where the pump
model shows how blood is pumped by the heart and is therefore distributed to the
other parts of the body. The heart functions as a pump which allows the blood to
circulate within the body. As for the balloon, the pumping you do to it mimics how the
heart pumps in our bodies. The balloon on the straw works like the valves on the heart.
It opens when you push down on the pump and closes as you release. This is what lets
the blood flow up through the open straw, but like in the body, it prevents backflow of
blood.

18. How does the heart function as a pump?

 The primary responsibility of the heart is to pump blood and distribute oxygen and
nutrients throughout the body.

19. Will the heart model be able to function properly if the straw is blocked?
 No, the heart model will not function properly. An example is our heart, imagine one of
the passages of your heart (where the blood flows) gets blocked. Our heart will not
function properly and the heart will be damaged due to lack of oxygen. This causes a
heart attack.
 Same goes with the heart model. The water or juice, which acts as a blood in the heart
model will not go through if the straw is blocked then the flow is damaged and the blood
will not reach its destination. Therefore, the heart model will not function properly.

Guide Questions:
9. How do the heart and the lungs work together?
 The heart and lungs work together to make sure the body has the oxygen-rich blood it
needs to function properly. The Pulmonary Loop The right side of the heart picks up the
oxygen-poor blood from the body and moves it to the lungs for cleaning and re-
oxygenating.

10. What takes place when you inhale and exhale?

 When you inhale (breathe in), air enters your lungs, and oxygen from that air moves to
your blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste gas, moves from your blood to
the lungs and is exhaled (breathed out). This process is called gas exchange.

11. What does blood deliver to every part of the body?

 Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to all the parts of the body so they can keep working.
Blood carries carbon dioxide and other waste materials to the lungs, kidneys, and
digestive system to be removed from the body.

12. Why is oxygen important to your body?

 Oxygen helps organisms grow, reproduce, and turn food into energy. It also gives our
cells the ability to break down food in order to get the energy we need to survive.

13. How will you describe the sequence of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and blood flow in your own
words?
 During gas exchange oxygen moves from the lungs to the bloodstream. At the same time
carbon dioxide passes from the blood to the lungs. This happens in the lungs between
the alveoli and a network of tiny blood vessels called capillaries, which are located in the
walls of the alveoli. Gas exchange allows the body to replenish the oxygen and eliminate
the carbon dioxide. Doing both is necessary for survival.
