functions of Listening.

Functions of listening

Appreciative Listening means listening to music, watching a

television show, attending a concert, or even listening to a great
speech or classroom lecture are examples of appreciative
listening. There are times when we are listening purely for
enjoyment, but there are also occasions when we might be
combining listening functions.

Empathetic listening occurs when we try to feel what another

person is feeling and can be considered the most challenging of
all listening functions. Empathy means listening to understand
the other person’s feelings and/or emotions with the goal of
validating them. Empathic listening is a higher-level listening
skill and therefore requires more energy. It has often been
described as putting yourself in someone else's shoes.

These two listening functions are extremely important,

especially for the numerous diverse societies or cultures that we
have.

Several members of cultures occasionally feel that their

heritage is neglected and undervalued. Every individual should
constantly appreciate and respect the perspectives of everyone
else, notably when it comes to cultural differences.

e. Developing Mastery (Explain) Essential questions:

 What are the different functions of Listening?
 Distinguish the usage of each function.
 Illustrate the difference among these types of listening.
 Explain the role that listening plays in appreciating the
virtues of all cultures.
f. Application and “I Say – Go!”
Generalization (Elaborate)
Jerome to Simon Says, this game requires students to listen
carefully before completing a task. The catch with this listening
game is that they have to wait until you say “Go!” before they
can carry out the instruction. To increase the difficulty, leave a
longer gap between the instruction and saying go!

g. Evaluation The students will be asked to watch a cultural film entitled,

“Village at the End of the World (2012)” This beautiful film
puts isolation into perspective. It was shot over the course of a
year in a village in northern Greenland that’s home to 59
people. They must hunt and fish for their food, and for much of

the year they can only be reached by helicopter. They dwell for
long stretches in complete darkness or complete sunlight. For
some this is paradise, for others, a dying way of life.

After watching, they will have the opportunity to share their

points of view about the said film. They will be encouraged to
discuss their realizations through written essays; and to explain
and justify their conclusions to the class.

h. Additional/Enrichment The students are required to listen to the song "Tatsulok" by

Activities (Extend) Glock 9 and will be encouraged to write a reflection about it.
