What's the Value of Supply Chain?

The recent economic downtown, dubbed by many as the "Great Recession" and arguably the worst economic period since the Great Depression, has many companies reevaluating their processes and looking at ways to cut costs and strengthen core competencies. Now more than ever, the management of supply chain functions is vital in order for companies to remain profitable, sustainable, and relevant. The Central Indiana Chapter of APICS is pleased to welcome three fantastic panelists for our August Professional Development Meeting: Iain Richardson, Senior Director of Global Supply Chain and Logistics - Eli Lilly and Co.

A Panel Discussion featuring Executives from Eli Lilly, Roche, and Rolls Royce
Dr. Robert Pinder, Director, Global Qualification and Risk Management - Roche Diagnostics Allan Swan, Vice President of Supply Chain Planning & Control - Rolls Royce North America Moderator: Bob Collins, Director of the APICS E&R Foundation The focus of the panel discussion is to uncover unique issues facing each Supply Chain leader. Issues may range from implementation of Lean manufacturing, reduction of costs associated with the Supply Chain and distribution, improvement of the basic processes in Supply Chain (i.e. MRPII, S&OP, forecasting, make to stock, make to order and order to cash), security of the Supply Chain, identifying, attracting and maintaining talented personnel, Education of the future Supply Chain professionals and other topics.

A Lean Education Moment

My oldest son got me thinking last weekend when he asked me what exactly I did. When I told him I was a Lean Operation Manager, he rolled his eyes and said, ok, what do you do? After a very long explanation of what exactly that means he asked, well give me an example. That got me thinking, I could have gone down the road of our latest Kaizen event at work, but having his interest (something a little unusual in our house) I thought about things he does, or is supposed to do around the house and how I could have a little Lean education moment benefiting the both of us Continuous Improvement! My mind raced for a minute and then I had the epiphany! His ongoing battle to cut the lawn and the struggles he has in getting it done was going to be our example. I told him, lets take a look at cutting the lawn and if I put my work hat on, how I would go about making it more efficient and meeting my expectations as a customer. Problems I have noted in executing this task: 1) I have to tell him when to cut it 2) he never tells me we are out of gas 3) which direction to cut the lawn (this happens to be a major quality issue with me) and 4) trimming around the fence and landscaping. Now, we have gone over how the lawn should be cut, I have done it with him on several occasions, showing him exactly what he needed to do. The failure in that was nothing was written down, so his interpretation of what I was saying always was different from my expectations. So, the first thing we did was to go over what we are going to accomplish. I had him grab some paper so he could write all of this down. I didnt bother going over the current process, to personal and painful. So we fast forwarded to Work Instructions and how we would communicate that. He already has a to do board with cutting the lawn as the top on the list. The problem is in when I think the lawn should be cut, driven by my quality expectation (a subjective measurement) and his interpretation (an objective measurement of when his 2 year old brother cant walk in the yard anymore without falling). So we both agreed what we needed to do was create a signal (Kanban) of when to cut the yard. We went out to the backyard and found a place along the fence that we could put a mark on that when the grass reached that height, it would be cut. We then went out to the garage for a little 5s project of organizing the lawn care equipment and the items needed to keep the equipment running. We use two types of gas, regular for the lawn mower, and the 2 cycle for the blower and the trimmer. Because of past confusion in adding the wrong gas to the equipment, both cans are labeled but are buried under a table. We cleaned out the area, placing each prominently in a place we both agreed to (team involvement), and drew a line on the can that you could see when it was low visually. We also organized items such as the 2 cycle oil that needed to be added to the blower and trimmer (we found 6 cans of this scattered all over the garage). I had actually been told we were out of the oil, so this was another big win. We also found 3 open packages of cutting line for the trimmer, another win for the budget. I didnt want to red tag anything, but we did go over that as well! So we completed cleaning and organizing, labeling where everything goes and then headed back inside to finish our project. He had notes from our talk out in the yard about the agreed upon height of when the lawn needs to be cut. He had the 5s layout completed and we both agreed it was both of our responsibility to keep the area clean and organized. Our final tasks in completing our project were to get agreement on which way to cut the grass each time and the final written procedures for actually cutting the grass. Continued on next page...

THE PRODUCTION LINE AUGUST 2010

We went thru the details, step by step, developing our written work instructions that were to be followed. We both signed off on the work instructions and posted them prominently on a cork board in the area where we organized the lawn care equipment. When we completed all this, I said to my son now imagine applying what we just did here to manufacturing a medical device and getting it to our end customer as quickly and inexpensively as possible. He thought for a moment about it and replied that seems pretty easy, thats what you do? Oh well is the thought that raced thru my head and with a

sigh responded yep giving up any hope of bringing him over to the truly converted Lean practitioner side for now. For those of us who are already hooked on all things APICS, our August PDM should be one not to miss. We have three Senior Supply Chain Executives, representing three of the most influential Fortune 500 Companies in Central Indiana participating in a panel discussion with Bob Collins, Director of the APICS E&R foundation as moderator. I hope to see you there for some really good insight of the future of Supply Chain.
