TEMPERATURE
Heat
A form of energy that is transferred due to the
difference in temperature.
A material will become hotter when gaining heat.
A material will become colder when losing heat.
Temperature
The degree of hotness or coldness of a material.
Temperature can be measured using a
thermometer. The standard unit for Measure g
temperature is degree Celsius (CO ) and degree
Fahrenheit (FO ).
02
THERMOMETER
A tool that is used to measure
temperature.

Meniscus level
The curved level of the liquid in the glass
tube of a thermometer.

CHANGES IN THE WATER
TEMPERATURE
The temperature of water changes
according to the surrounding
temperature.
EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON WATER

As the surrounding temperature of

which a liquid, such as water, solidifies.
EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON WATER
100oC
As the temperature of surrounding
increases, the water temperature also
increases. At 100oC, water has
reached its boiling point. Boiling point
is the temperature at which A liquid
(water) boils and turns to vapour
(steam).
The heat in the hot tea flows to the metal
spoon. The metal spoon becomes hot
because it gains heat energy from the heat.

The heat from hot water flows to the surrounding

from a hot to cold area. This causes the hot water
to lose heat and the temperature of the water
decreases. The temperature of the water will
decrease until it is equal to the temperature of the
surrounding or the room temperature.

EXPANSION & CONTRACTION
OF MATERIALS
Material will expand when gaining heat, and
contract when losing heat.
The hot steam from
the hot water will
create pressure inside
the bottle. The bottle Gain heat,

pressure inside the expand

the surrounding air
pressure.
