8. Objectives of the Course: To introduce students the principle of operation and performance analysis
of synchronous machines and DC machines.
9. Skill development of the student (expected from the course): Following are the COs of EE258

EE258-CO.1 Understand DC machines basics, different types of excitation, and
performance characteristics.
EE258-CO.2 Analyze speed control methodologies and application of DC machines and
special machines.
EE258-CO.3 Understand synchronous machines basics, circuit model, phasor diagrams
under different loading conditions, and exposure to programming tools.
EE258-CO.4 Ability to understand performance characteristics of non-salient pole
synchronous machines and salient pole synchronous machines.
EE258-CO.5 Understand frequency and voltage control of synchronous machines.
EE258-CO.6 Understand synchronization of machine to grid, interconnected operation
and stability of synchronous machines.

1. Tutorial on MATLAB.
2. Steady-state analysis of AC circuits and power calculations in single- and three-phase
circuits [MATLAB-based]. 9*3*2=54
3. Solution of linear and non-linear algebraic equations, and numerical solution of ODEs
[MATLAB-based].
4. Rotating magnetic field analysis of synchronous generator [MATLAB-based].
5. Speed control of DC motor.
6. Load test on a BLDC motor.
7. Open-circuit test and three-phase steady-state short-circuit test on a synchronous
generator, and estimation of voltage regulation by EMF method.
8. Load test on a standalone synchronous generator with R, L and C type of loads.
9. Synchronization of an alternator to three-phase mains.

DC generators.
