OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
Holy Spirit 3
LECTURE ONE
LESSON I
WHO IS THIS HOLY SPIRIT?
INTRODUCTION
The person called the Holy Spirit is the most misunderstood and misinterpreted
of the GODHEAD. The Evangelicals see Him as the dormant unannounced
guest, something like a vapour floating around in the inside. The Pentecostals
see Him as a force behind speaking in tongues with great emotional displays.
The Charismatics see Him as the operator of signs and wonder and diverse
manifestations like "Falling" under the power.
THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS A PERSONALITY
The Holy Spirit is not a falling, He is not a feeling, and He is not an emotion.
He is not fire, He is not Dove, and He is not Water. He is the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a personality. He speaks (Acts 13:2). He has emotions
(Romans 8:27). He is the third person of the Trinity. He manifests in various
forms or symbols e.g. fire, dove, water etc.
He quickens i.e. make alive mortal bodies (Romans 8:1 1). He is the power that
works in us for answers to our prayers (Eph. 3:20-2 1)
THE GODHEAD
There has been some confusion as to the oneness of the GODHEAD. The fact
that we proclaim God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost to be
one does not imply that they are one single individual. I John 5:7. There are
THREE -------- three means they can be counted as one, two and three
personalities.
However, the three are collectively spoken of as one God because of the perfect
unity that exists between them. They are completely united in purpose and plan.
There exists between them an all-for-one-one-for-all perfect unity.
We have seen the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost mentioned together in a
single verse. Matt.28.19, Matt 3:16, Jn. 14:26, Jn. 15:26, 11 Cor. 13:14. The
father is a personality so also is the son. A person is not the outside covering
but the inside. A corpse is thus referred to as the "remains" of a person not the
person. The Holy Spirit is a person although without the outer covering. He too
can feel, perceive, responds, and gets hurt, can love as all of us do.
Holy Spirit 4
I Jn, 5:7. There are 3 that bear records in heaven; the father, the son and the
Holy Spirit and they are one.
FATHER
I Cor. 8:6. One God the father, for whom are all things He is the owner of all
things Ps. 50:12, Ps. 89:1 1. He is the ultimate and father of all (Jn. 14:2). He is
the one that sacrificed His son Jesus (Rom. 8:32; Jn. 3:16).
After the death of Christ the Son (A.D) came the dispensation of the Holy
Ghost, the power of God. In Lk. 24:49, Jesus sends His Spirit to us from the
father. Jesus said the Holy Ghost, will come when He had gone to the father.
(Jn. 16:7). Now the son is seated at the right hand of the father (Eph.1: 20)
receiving the Holy Ghost and sending Him forth. (Acts 2:33).
LESSON TWO
Holy Spirit 5
Holy Spirit." In Acts 28:25-26. Paul, quoting from Isa.6: 9 said the Holy Spirit
spake while Isaiah says the Lord spake i.e. Holy Spirit = the Lord.
The Holy Spirit does things that can only be done by God
a. He causes people to be born again (Jn. 3:5-7)
b. He reproves the world of sin, righteousness and judgement (Jn. 16:8)
c. He casts out devils (Matt. 12:28)
d. He raises the dead (Rom. 8:1 1)
As soon as we can realise that the Holy Spirit is a person just like the father and
the son, our postures toward the Holy Spirit will completely change.
Firstly, it is important to note that the Holy Spirit dialogues in the Bible
passages and we know that we cannot have dialogue with stones, trees, or an
impersonal force.
i) The Bible continually used personal pronouns to refer to the Holy Spirit -
Jn. 15:26, Jn. 16:7,8; Jn. 16: 13.
ii) The Holy Spirit Speaks - Acts 13:2; Rev. 2:7
iii) He helps our weakness - Rom. 8:26
iv) He prays - Rom. 8:26
v) He has emotions - Rom. 8:27
vi) He is a teacher - Jn. 14:26
vii) He testifies - Jn. 15:26
viii) He is a good guide - Jn. 16:13
ix) He gives orders - Acts. 16:6-7
x) He calls people to the work of God - Acts 13:2
Holy Spirit 6
xi) He comforts believers - Act 9:31
HOLY GHOST PERSONALITY/CHARACTERISTICS
To be a person, an entity must have certain attributes such as:
a. Knowledge of things and facts. The Holy Spirit knows things. Jn.
14:26; 1 Cor. 2: 10-11; Rom. 8:27. 1 John 20:21
b. Feelings such as joy, anger, pleasure and sorrow. Love by the Holy
Ghost (Rom. 5:5). He can be grieved (Eph. 4:30). He groans Rom.
8:26.
c. Will to take decision. The Holy Spirit takes decisions. I Cor. 12:11
The Holy Spirit's personal nature is the reason our worship of Him is so
important
LESSON THREE
1. WATER
Jesus cried for everyone that is thirsty to come and drink of the living water,
which is the Holy Ghost (Jn.7:37-39). Water preserves life so also the Holy
Spirit. Water cleanses (Titus 3:5) water for growth (Ps. 1:3). Thirst is required
to get Holy Spirit (Isa. 55:1).
2. FIRE
"He (Jesus) shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost and with fire" Matt.3:11.
God has always made His presence known with fire especially in the Old
Testament. (Exo. 3:1-5; 1 Kings 18). The Holy Ghost came upon the disciples
in the upper room as fire (Act 2:3). Fire burns off chaff, filth and all that are
unwashed. (Heb. 12:29; Jer. 23:29) Fire keeps off bulls of Bashan. (Is. 59:19)
3. WIND
Everyone born of the spirit is spirit and they all move like the wind (Jn.3:8). The
Greek word for wind and spirit is the same-pneuma. There is no place on earth
where the Holy Spirit or wind is not present. We cannot control the wind as we
wish instead we follow the Holy Spirit as he directs.
4. RAIN
Holy Spirit 7
"He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass; as showers that water the
earth. Ps. 72:6; Hos. 6:3.
In Palestine farmers expect rain twice a year. The early rain signals the
beginning of the planting season. But the "Latter Rain" or the springtime rain
makes crops grow rapidly until harvest.
When Jesus came to the earth, He sowed the seed of the gospel. Ten days after
His ascension as the disciples prayed, the early rain of the Holy Spirit fell.
During the reformation in the 16th Century, through efforts of
Martin Luther and thereafter John Wesley, Charles G. Finney, Dwight L. Moody
the "Latter Rain" began. We are still witnessing the latter rain work of the Holy
Spirit.
5. DOVE
"And Jesus, when He was baptised ... and lo, the heavens were opened unto
Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove... (Matt. 3:16). And
John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove,
and it abode upon Him (Jn. 1:32)
6. SEAL
We are sealed by the seal of the Holy Spirit of promise (Eph. 1: 13). Seal is an
instrument used to stamp something to prevent it being opened by unauthorised
fellows. Don't touch without permission (Ps. 105:15).
7. EYES
2 Chron16: 9. The eyes of God go to and fro the whole earth. The eyes of God
are the same as the seven lamps of God (Zec.4: 2,10). The seven lamps of God
are the seven spirits of God, which is the Holy Spirit of God (Rev. 4:5).
Ps. 32:8. Eyes are for instruction (Jn. 14:26) and to guide (Jn. 16:13).
Holy Spirit 8
LESSON FOUR
No Christian has a right to power before he has the Holy Spirit. The power you
receive will make it possible for you to become an evidence in the world. Once
You are baptised into the Holy Spirit, you carry the seed of power in you.
The Holy Ghost has come to make man a living testimony of God's WORD.
He makes pure, Holy and perfect.
Everyone lives to fulfil his name. Jesus means saviour. He came to save people
from the trip of sin (Matt. 1:2 1). His purpose was clearly defined by His name.
The force of accomplishment also drove Him. I Jn.3:8
Nabal means folly. He behaved foolishly and suffered for his foolishness. (1
Sam.25:25).
Abraham means father of nations. (Gen. 17:4-5). His seed is like the sand of the
sea and like the stars of heaven.
Adam received the instruction specifically on the behalf of all men on the
importance of a name. Gen. 2:19.
When it was time therefore to name Jesus, the Holy Spirit was present (Lk.
2:2526) to make sure that the proper name was given. The Holy Ghost himself
has several names.
The Comforter (Jn. 15:26) is one who gives solace and is called to standby the
side of a person in difficulty. He counsels, pleads, entreats, exhorts and
strengthens so that a person can gain victory over his opponents. (Is. 59:19).
The Holy Spirit has come to make life more comfortable for believers.
Holy Spirit 9
Jesus considers Himself a Comforter before the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:16) who
would take His place and work in His name, as "another' comforter. Before
Jesus, the fattier was the comforter of men (11 Cor. 1:3-4).
No wonder Jesus said there is no time, man should be left comfortless. (Jn. 14:1
8). The father healed and provided Exo. 15:25-26, the son Jesus healed and
provide Act 10:38, the Holy Spirit is doing the same now.
God has called us unto holiness reason He gave us His Holy Spirit (I Thess. 4:7-
8). Holy Spirit is the power that brings holiness and purity to believers as His
name suggests.
T he Holy Spirit is called the spirit of Christ because Jesus is the distributor
(Acts 2:33; Jn. 20:22). This implies that anyone who does not have the spirit of
(from) Christ is none of His. (Rom.. 8:9)
The Holy Spirit is both spirit of the father as well as that of the son because He
is part of the trinity. Whatsoever belongs to the father belongs to the son (Jn.
10:30). Jesus is called son of the highest Lk. 1:32 While the Holy Spirit called
power of the highest.
f. FREE SPIRIT (Ps. 51:12)
The Holy Spirit has free movement just like the wind (Jn. 3:8). He was moving
freely at the beginning (Gen. 1:2). And He is freely available to everyone that
thirsteth.
There is no other power that can compare with the highest power of the Holy
Spirit. All power on earth and in heaven has been given to Jesus (Matt. 28:18)
and the Holy Spirit is the spirit of Christ. And power belongeth unto God (Ps.
62:11)
Holy Spirit 10
h. SPIRIT OF GLORY- (I Peter 4:14)
He came mightily on Jesus to glorify Him (Matt. 3:16). He came also on the
disciples for glorification.
The Spirit of grace and supplication. He is the Spirit for Divine enablement
(Act 4:3 1) that turned Peter from the jelly like man that denied Jesus to the
bold Peter who see shadow was healing the sick.
Counsel, Knowledge, understanding and wisdom sum up to wisdom i.e.' The Holy
Spirit is therefore the spirit of wisdom and might. He rested mightily on Jesus (Lk.2:52;
I Cor. 1:24).

LESSON SIX
Holy Spirit 12
THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (2)
There are so many aspects of the ministry of the Holy Spirit but we will consider
just a few.
1 Peter 3:18; Rom. 8:1 1. The Spirit of God flowing out of your belly make s
your mortal body become supernaturally alive i.e. no form of sickness can
survive in your body. e.g. insects around fire. Matt. 3:11-12. He will bum off
the chaff and fan them away.
Jn. 16:12-13. He reveals the truth contained in the word of God to the believer.
All scriptures are written by Holy men moved by the Holy Spirit, 2 Peter 1:21.
Thus to get the truth from the Book, we need the assistance of the author who is
the Holy Ghost. Preaching without the help of the Holy Ghost will result in
heresy.
3. HE SHOWS THINGS TO COME
John 16:13-14, I Cor. 2: 1 0-12 He reveals secrets, He receives from God about
your tomorrow.
John 16:8. People get saved not by our might or our power but by the spirit of
God. (Zecc. 4:6). Your Preaching cannot save an ant. "When He is come, He
will reprove the world of sin (Jn. 16:8-9). Anyone who does not believe in
Jesus is a sinner.
7. TEACHING
The Holy Spirit has a teaching Ministry to tile believers, Jn. 14:26. In Acts
8:27- 39, the Ethiopian eunuch Could not understand the scripture except
through tile assistance of the Spirit-filled-Philip. I Cor. 2:9-16 says revelation
Holy Spirit 13
knowledge is by the spirit of God. The Holy Spirit teaches a believer by
quickening his understanding, i.e. He touches his mind and brain, then begins to
compare spiritual things (I Cor. 2:13) and reveals hidden things (Jn. 16:14) even
the deep things of God.
He even reminds us of thing which we already learnt but have forgotten, Jn.
14:26 His teaching today comes through meditation on the word. in Acts 10: 1 9
while Peter mediated, the Holy Spirit spoke. In Rev. 2:7, the Spirit is constantly
talking to the church. The anointing also teaches believers, I Jn. 2:27.
The anointing imparts wisdom, Is. 1 1:2; Acts 6: 1 0; Exo. 33:3 1; Eph. 1: 1 7;
also in the story of the woman caught in adultery, and "the coin of Caesar". The
anointing imparts boldness Acts 14:3.
8. PROTECTION OF BELIEVERS
The Holy Spirit warns of impending danger: Acts 20:22-23. The Holy Spirit
warned Paul of impending danger. Acts 21:9-1 1, the Holy Spirit warned Paul
of impending danger in Jerusalem. Acts 16:6, the Holy Spirit warned Paul and
Silas against preaching the word in Asia. The Holy Spirit still warns believers
today either through the word, the still small voice or the conscience, or through
work, or circumstances.
9. HE HELP PRAYERS OF SAINTS
There is no active intercession outside the Holy Spirit. "He maketh intercession
for the saints according to the will of God" Rom.. 8:26-27. Man can ask amiss
but the Holy can never ask amiss because He knows the very mind of God. Eph.
3:20:2 1. Answer come to us as a result of the Holy Ghost in us.
LESSON SEVEN
Holy Spirit 14
A. Things to Know.
1. He is a promise to us. (Joel 2:28; Lk. 24:4a)
2. At new birth, you are born of the spirit. (Jn. 3:5-6)
3. At Holy Ghost Baptism; it becomes a power. (Acts 1:8)
D. Why Tongues?
I Tongues is the language of the spirit. (I Cor. 14:15)
2. It is an evidence of indwelling spirit. (Acts 2:4; 10:24; 19:6)
3. Holy Spirit and my spirit in discussion. (Prov. 20:27; 1 Cor. 2:1 1)
4. Builds up faith. (Jude 20)
5. Perfection in prayer. (I Jn. 5:14; Rom.. 8:26-27)
6. For effective prayer warfare. (Eph. 6:10-18; Lk. 21:15)
NOTE:
a. Takes place either before or after water baptism. (Acts 10:44; 8:17)
b. Takes place with or without human contact. (Acts 8:17; 19:6; 2:1-4
c. Holy Spirit is not for strong but to make the weak strong.
LESSON EIGHT
Just as the Holy Spirit is God's gift to every believer, the gifts of the Holy Spirit
are God's love gifts to the church. It is the intention of God the father that His
CHARACTER and POWER should find expression in the life of the believer.
Man does not use the Holy Spirit but the Holy Spirit occupies man, fills him and
use that person according to his own will, time and situation. The Holy Ghost is
always in control I Cor. 12:7.
You are not to use this gift as you like lest you grieve Him. He is not your
servant.
Some have misused the power and when the power goes they start telling lies.
a) To manifest the body of Christ on earth, I Cor. 12:12-14, 27. The church
is the body of Christ and all believers are members of that body. Christ is the
head of that body. Through the Holy Spirit Christ is manifested, manifesting
Himself through several believers so that they could go into all the world to
minister just like Christ ministered during His earthly ministry.
C) To edify the Church, I Cor. 14:3, 12,26. For example, the gift of prophecy
is especially for the edification of the church.
d) For the deliverance and protection of members of the body. Many of the
gifts help to demonstrate God's manifold power.
e) For perfecting the Church Eph. 4:11-14. At times, some chosen vessels
are used, e.g. Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists etc.
Holy Spirit 16
WHAT OUR ATTITUDE SHOULD BE HERE
LESSON NINE
These gifts are so classified for ease of study. The division is by no means rigid. Very
often, two or more gifts may be working in a believer.
REVELATIONS GIFTS
These are gifts that expose something. The gift of revelation deals with supernatural
communication revealed through the Holy Spirit to the heart of the one whom has
received this gift.
I. WORD OF WISDOM
Holy Spirit 17
Word of wisdom can be defined as the supernatural ability to see into the PLAN and
PURPOSE of God. It always has something to do with future events, Quite a lot of
word of wisdom is actually prophecy. When God gives you a word of wisdom, He
gives only a fragment, e.g. Daniel when he prophesied on the future Persian, Grecian
and Roman empires which had not been born e.g. Stephen Acts 6:10. An utterance
from the Holy Spirit prophesying Gods Word to specific situation, e.g. (Acts 6:3, 1 Cor
12:8 ).
2. WORD OF KNOWLEDGE
This can be defined as the supernatural ability to see into SITUATIONS and
CIRCUMSTANCES in the immediate past and present, e.g. Jesus saw Nathaniel under
a tree. Jn. 1:47-48; 2 Chr. 16:9. (Peter) Acts 5:9-10
3. DISCERNING OF SPIRIT
Discerning of Spirit can be defined as the supernatural ability to see into the spirit world
and distinguish between what is of the Spirit of God and that of Darkness. This should
not be confused with suspicion. Discerning of Spirit is accurate diagnosis of what is
happening in the spirit realm e.g. (Peter) Acts 8:18-24, (Paul) Acts 13:8
a. You know them by their fruits. Matt. 7:15-20. The devil can fake the gifts but
cannot fake the fruits.
b. 'They always speak anxiety and worry whereas the Spirit of God speaks
peace. Rom.. 14:17.
c. The devil is unclean so also is his spirit. Mk. 5:1-5. Evil spirits cause false
charges and condemnation, raises ugly thoughts and imaginations,
prophesying doom and producing fear.
LESSON TEN
POWER GIFTS
Power gifts reveal God's ability. These are the gifts that do things. Power gifts
are mighty gifts in which the power of God appears so as to manifest a
miraculous answer through the ' supernatural creative intervention. Power gift
change people and their environment.
1. GIFT OF FAITH
It enables you to place a demand on God's ability (Matt.21:21-22; Mk 9:23).
This is different from ordinary faith. This gift of faith is with certainty, like
locking a vice e.g. Daniel's survival in the lion's den; and Shadrach, Meshach
and Abednego
Holy Spirit 18
in the fiery furnace, Elijah and rain. It is God bringing to pass a supernatural
event needing no human effort.
2. WORKING OF MIRACLE
Supernatural demonstration is signs and wonders e.g. Supernatural ability to
alter the law of nature. Also the division of the Red Sea by Moses
through pointing of his rod. Ex. 15:8. Works through a human agent e.g.
Samson killing a lion.
3. GIFT OF HEALINGS
1. PROPHECY
Supernatural ability to bring a message from God in a known tongue, i.e. It is
inspired utterance in a known tongue. This is the best gift according to Paul's
rating, I Cor. 14: 1.
In conclusion, the vocal gifts involve a co-operation between God and man.
God supplies the utterance, man does the speaking.
LECTURE THREE
LESSON ELEVEN
Holy Spirit 19
IMPARTATION OF GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
Spiritual gifts may be imparted in several ways to them that believe. The source
of impartation is God Himself or a carrier of His presence.
A. GOD HIMSELF
Acts 10:38. God imparted Jesus with all the gifts of the spirit. Lk. 4:18. Also
as a preacher, prophet, teacher etc. God pours down His Spirit according to the
prophecy in Joel 2:28. Upon the Apostles as they tarried in Jerusalem. Acts 2:2-
4. For this kind of impartation, PRAYER is needed. Lk.2:21-22; Lk. 4:2,
14 ;24:29
1. LAYING ON OF HANDS
Spiritual gifts can be transmitted through a human vessel by laying on of hands.
Deut. 34:9. Joshua was imparted by Moses via hand laying. Acts 19:6. Paul
imparted the gifts of tongues as well as prophecy (Vocal gifts) on the Ephesian
church.
Paul also imparted Timothy by laying on of hands. I Tim. 4:14 and 11 Tim. 1:6.
The man God uses to impart spiritual gifts must be a carrier of the presence of
God.
2. ANOINTING OIL
The anointing oil is not a symbol but a carrier of the Holy Spirit.
Several things have been known to carry the presence of God,
Ps. 1 14:1-3. Sea fled but it was rod that Moses pointed at the Red Sea (Exo.
14:21).
Jordan was driven back by the Ark the people carried. (Jos. 3) also in 11 Kings
2.5-7. Jordan was parted by the mantle of Elijah.
Why are these things happening, they saw the presence of God.
I Sam.6:19. 50,060 men destroyed by God in the Ark.
11 Sam. 6:6-7. Uzzah lost his life for trying to help the Ark of
The Anointing Oil is a prominent carrier of the Holy Spirit presence necessary
for impartation. I Sam. 16:13. Samuel anointed with oil Spirit came upon him
from that day - Impartation.
Holy Spirit 20
3. MANTLE
Anointing rubs on people through association 11 Kings 2:1-15. Elisha receiving
the mantle of Elijah, the anointing rubbed on him so much that the sons of the
prophets bowed to him. Elijah's mantle carried God's presence and could
therefore impart power on Elisha.
LESSON TWELVE
BUILDING UP POWER
Electricity power makes many things to work - fan, bulb, A.C etc. So also does
the Holy Spirit power makes many things to work in our lives. But the power of
the Highest order- (Lk. 1:35) is somehow different from Electricity power. You
do not switch Him off and on, you build Him up just as the tripod fire., and You
stay on your knees to blow and blow.
JESUS BUILT UP POWER
Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit Lk. 4:1-2. But He still went into the wilderness
40 days to build tip the power of the Spirit (Lk.4:2-13). He prayed and fasted for
40 days praying on His knees and building up the fire until vs. 14. He came out
of the wilderness with Power for manifestation. Acts 10:38
THE DISCIPLES BUILT UP POWER
In Jn.20:21-22, the disciples of Jesus Christ received Holy Ghost Baptism. In
Acts 2:1-2 they waited 10 days in the upper room building up power until
Suddenly the power came.
HOW TO BUILD UP POWER
Get on your knees and praise Him in known tongues (tongues of men) Praise
Him yet in unknown tongues (tongues of angels I Cor. 1 3: 1
Call Him by His names.
Call Him by His titles and achievements.
Pray in the Holy Ghost
Maintain an attitude of thanksgiving and joy
Maintain a walk of purity
The arrival of the Holy Ghost power is always announced and makes the
individual a new man e.g. Peter was changed after his encounter in Acts 2:1-2 to
Peter the Rock. In Act chapter 3, the Peter that was afraid of a maid could now
heal the lame and faced the council boldly.
DEPARTURE OF POWER
God's Spirit has no ability to struggle with man (Gen.6:3). So His power can be
quenched in a man's life (I Thess. 5:19). Jesus warns not to speak against the
Holy Spirit (Matt. 1 2:32)
Eph. 4:30-31 Paul also warns not to grieve the Holy Spirit with bitterness,
wrath, anger, evil speaking, malice etc., The children of Israel rebelled and
grieved the Holy Spirit so God fought them. (Isa. 63: 1 0).
Holy Spirit 21
To lie to the Holy Spirit will not only cause a departure of power but can also
result in death (Acts 5:3).
LESSON THIRTEEN
God never waits for us to get perfect before giving us the gifts and once given,
He does not collect the gifts back. Rom.. 11:29. Thus when God gives
something, He gives it fully and does not recall it.
The fruit of the spirit belongs to the spirit and as we walk close to the Lord.
these are evidence in our lives. The more yielded to the Holy Spirit we become
the more of the fruits we exhibit.
Without the fruit, the gift can become ineffective especially in the area of
Discerning and casting out devils. The evil spirits are very quick at drawing
your attention to the sins in you. The "accuser of the brethren" will accuse you
until you begin to lose certainty in what you are trying to do.
It is important therefore for us to keep a balance not losing the gifts or the fruits.
The gifts of the spirit should be exercised along with the fruit of the spirit
blossoming in our lives.
A life that exhibits the fruits will live long to enjoy the gifts of the Spirit
because of the guaranteed presence of the Holy Spirit, and consequently, God s
power in such a life, but if the opposite is the case - immature death and often, a
Holy Spirit 22
cessation of the gifts may results, e.g. Samson, Saul and contemporary examples
like, William Branham, Jack Coe who both fell victim of pride. Samson fell
victim of immorality and Saul fell victim of pride.
LESSON FOURTEEN
8. Word of Knowledge
The incident of Eutichus (Acts 20:7-12). Paul said he was not dead. Also Paul
saw and spake concerning their voyage in Acts 27:10,22.
Holy Spirit 24
