Background Information for Learners

A site or website is a central location of web pages that are related and
accessed by visiting the home page of the website.

How to open a website?

To view a website requires a browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Edge, Safari,

Firefox, or Chrome). You can open a website by entering the URL in the address bar.
For example, the Facebook website address URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is
https://www.facebook.com.

If you don't know the URL of the website you want to visit, you can use a search
engine (yahoo, google, bing etc.) to find the website on the Internet.

The first website was built at CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research, a
provisional body founded in 1952 with the mandate of establishing a world-class
fundamental physics research organization in Europe) by Tim Berners-Lee and
launched on August 6, 1991.

What is the difference between a website and a web page?

The primary difference between a web page and a website is that a web page is
a single document on the Internet under a unique URL. In contrast, a website is a
collection of multiple web pages in which information on a related topic or other
subject is linked together under a domain address.

What can you do on a website?

On most websites, you read the information contained on each web page. If
there are any interesting hyperlinks (referred to as a link and web link, a hyperlink is
an icon, graphic, or text that links to another file or object. The World Wide Web is
comprised of hyperlinks linking trillions of pages and files to one another), you follow
those links by clicking or tapping on them to find more information or perform a task.
You can also listen to music, watch videos, shop, communicate, and much more on
many websites
Searching the Web requires both skills and patience but, where should we start?

To enter the world wide web (www), you need to have either of these two:

✔ Internet connection or WIFI (it can be a modem or a pocket wifi); or

✔ Data subscription (cellphone load)

There are two ways to search for information:
A. Using keyword/s
B. Using Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
Searching Using Keyword/s
Follow the steps wholeheartedly so you can arrive at the correct output.

Step 1. Open the page first using Google Chrome and enter the texts or keywords in the
search bar pointed by the red arrow to find relevant information
Step 2. Type in the search bar the word, (for example) “COVID-19”.
There, you will find out several information about the topic.

Step 3. Click the first search result inside the red box and copy the information about
COVID-19 in your English activity notebook.

Step 4 Click the Back Button to go back to the Home Page.

A. If you’re using a cellphone, click the x button as pointed by the red arrow as
shown in picture A.
B. If you’re using a computer, click the back button enclosed in a red box as
shown in picture B.

Step 5. For more explanations about the topic, open the page shown below and
type this URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDONzKjPVOA
in the address bar pointed by the red arrow.

Points to Remember:

To better get specific results:

⚫ Use minus sign or hyphen (-) to exclude a word.

⚫ Use quotation marks (“ ”) to find pages that have the exact term.

This time, you will research using the Uniform Resource Locator or URL. URL is
the page address that you will find in the long bar at the top of your Web browsers.
Searching Using URL
Step 1. Click Google Chrome in your
screen.
This will appear on your screen.

Step 2. Type the name of the website

http://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-
conditions/covid-19-basics in the address page as pointed by
the red arrow.

Step 3. Press Enter key if you are using a computer. Press the Search icon as pointed by
the red arrow if you are using a cell phone.

You are now about to explore the content of the URL.

Step 4. Read the content of the page and write 5 unfamiliar words that you see in the
computer screen.

Step 5. Click the Back Button as pointed by the red arrow to go back to the Home Page.
