NAME : AFIQAH AMALIA BINTI JASME DATE : 4 NOVEMBER, 2022

NUR FARHANAH BINTI ROSLI GROUP : AS125D
STUDENT ID: 2022837094

RESULT
Data:
Mass of Na2C03 (g) 0.5015
Mass of Ca(NO3)2 (g) 1.0011
Mass of filter paper (g) 1.0388
Mass of CaCO3 precipitate + filter paper (g) 1.3873
Mass of CaCO3 precipitate (g) 0.3485

CALCULATION :

1. Write a balanced chemical equation including phases for the reaction.

Na2CO3 + Ca(NO3)2 CaCO3 + 2NaNO3

2. Determine the limiting reagent for the reaction.

Na2CO3 Ca(NO3)2

A) Mol given in balance

equation 1 1

B) Calculated mol 0.5 g/ 106 1 g/ 164

= 0.0047 = 0.0061

C) Ratio of calculated 0.0047/0.0061 0.0061/0.0047

mol = 0.7705 = 1.298

D) Ratio of mol given

in balance equation 1/1 1/1

E) Step C-D 0.7705-1= -ve 1.298-1= +ve

(LR=Na2CO3) ( Excess=Ca(NO3)2)
3. Calculate the expected mass of CaCO3 produced from the masses of
Na2CO3 and Ca(NO3)2.

Mass of CaCO3 = CaCO3 x mol of Na2CO3 x RMM CaCO3

Na2CO3
=1/1 x 0.0047 x 100
= 0.47 g

4. Determine the percentage yield CaCO3.

Percent yield = Actual yield x 100

Theoretical yield
= 0.3485 x 100
0.47
= 74.15 %

DISCUSSION

Based on the experiment, we can calculate the exact amount of reactant needed to
react with another element. We also can determine the limiting reactant from the
reaction between sodium carbonate and calcium nitrate by mixed them together. After
that, the filter paper will be use to filter the mixture and produce white solid of
calcium carbonate, CaCO3. It was found the percentage yield can be obtained higher
than what we get in this experiment. This is because when we drying the filter paper
and the CaCO3 precipitate, we saw the filter paper had already accidently teared a
little on the middle. This may cause the lost weight of the CaCO3.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we can calculate amount of product actually obtained and compare the
value with the theoretical value. Besides, the limiting reagent has been identified by
calculations and the percentage yield of CaCO3 has been obtained in this experiment.
