DEFINITION OF TERMS

RELATION
A relation is a function that relates values from a set of values (called the
domain) to a second set of values (called the Range)
A relation is also a set of ordered pairs (x,y)
FUNCTION
A function is a relation where each element in the domain is related to
only one value in the range by some rules.
A function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) such that no two ordered pairs
have the same x-value but different y-values
DOMAIN
The set of all first components.
The set of inputs which serves as entry value to the function rule.
RANGE
The set of all second components
Set of outputs
PIECEWISE FUNCTION
A function which consists of two or more functions in a specified domain.
VERTICAL LINE TEST
A graph of a mathematical relation is a function if any vertical line drawn
passing through the graph intersects the graph at exactly one point.

LESSON 1

FUNCTION AS REPRESENTATION OF REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS

Functions can often be used to model real situations. Identifying an
appropriate functional model will lead to a better understanding of
various phenomena

Examples
1. Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if one
meal costs Php 40.

2. A videoke machine can be rented for php1000 for three days but for the
fourth day onwards, an additional cost of php400 per day is added.
Represent the cost of renting a videoke machine as a piecewise function
of the number of days it is rented.

3. The cost of hiring a catering service to serve food for a party is php 150
per head for 20 persons or less. Php130 per head for 21 to 50 persons.
And php 110 per head for 51 to 100 persons. For 100 or more persons,
the cost is at php100 per head. Represent the total cost as a piecewise
function of the number of attendees of the party.

4. One hundred meters of fencing is available to enclose a rectangular area

next to a river. Give a function A that can be enclosed in terms of x.

5. A rectangular field is to be fenced along the bank of a river, and no fence

is required along the river. The material for the fence costs php8 per
running foot for the two ends and php12 per running foot for the ends
and php12 per running foot for the side parallel to the river; php3600
worth of fence is to be used.

6. Emma and Brandon drive away from the camp ground. Emma went
north and Brandon went east. Emma’s speed is 40kph and brandon‘s
speed is 75kph.

a. Express the distance between the cars as a function of time.

b. Find the domain of a function.

7. A buko pie store can produce buko pie at Php 95. It is estimated that if
the selling price of the buko pie is x pesos, then the number of buko pie
sold each day is 1,000-x
a. Express the daily profit of the store as a function of x.
b. Use the result in to determine the daily profit, given that the selling
price is php160.

8. A rectangular swimming pool with dimensions 30 feet by 50 feet is

surrounded by a sidewalk of uniform width, x feet. What is the width of
the side walk when the sidewalk area is 704 square feet?
