Assignment no: 6
1.1 How can the erosion be minimized on the roadway drainage channels? (4)
1.3 Detailed geotechnical investigations should be carried out once the route has been
staked out. Discuss the type of methods and procedures used to obtain field samples
for the following geotechnical investigations. (6)
2.1 A 650ha catchment area situated near Zeerust in North West (inland region) has an
average annual rainfall of 1000mm. The elevation at the most remote part of the
catchment is 524m and the elevation at the discharge point of the natural channel
watercourse is 496m. The watercourse runs through the catchment and has a length of
2.19km and a fairly uniform slope. The catchment is covered by 15% dense timber
plantations, 65% cultivated land and 20% grassland. The soil permeability over the
catchment area can be 25% semi-permeable, 55% permeable and 20% very permeable.
The average slope of the hillsides (So) in the catchment was calculated to be 1.5% over
65% of the catchment and 3.0% over the remainder. Using the Rational Method
calculate the peak discharges for a 50year return period storm. (Use the lowest of the
range of values given in the appendices to calculate the run-off coefficient C for
Urban areas) (30)
2.2 A rectangular drainage channel is located on the side of a highway. You are requested
to calculate the discharge (Q) of the channel. The channel has a breath of 1500mm,
depth of 500mm slope (S) of 1.2% and Manning’s n = 0.012 (5)
