By Dayo Jethro.
There are two men standing by the side of the road, holding guns. The driver tries to speak to them.
The driver is KUNLE'S FATHER, 29 years old man, seated in the driver seat of the car.
KUNLE'S FATHER
I'm coming from a business trip, and I need to get home before nightfall. Please let me get going.
GUNMAN 1
Get out of the car.
KUNLE'S FATHER
What's going on? I haven't done anything wrong.
GUNMAN 2
Shut up.
KUNLE'S FATHER
Please, I have a family, I have a wife and a son. Please.
GUNMAN 1
Too bad.
Kunle's Father starts to cry, pleading for his life. But then, we hear the gunshot, and he falls to the ground. The two gunmen get back into
their vehicle and drive off.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN
We see KUNLE, 19 years old teenager, open his university acceptance letter.
KITCHEN
—the kitchen, he finds his mother, KUNLE'S MOTHER, 45 years old lady, cutting vegetables.
KUNLE'S MOTHER
Oh my goodness, you make it son!
KUNLE
Yes o, mama!
KUNLE'S MOTHER
I'm so proud of you son, you've done so well. May you start this university and come up with good grades in Jesus name.
KUNLE
Amen!
FLASHBACK:
We cut to a flashback of him as a child, running to his father and hugging him.
FLASHBACK ENDS.
Then, we cut back to the present. Kunle is deep in thought, and we can see the pain in his eyes.
KUNLE'S MOTHER
This is really good news for my baby! You got in! This is wonderful news! I'm so proud of you.
KUNLE
I know, mom. But it's bittersweet. I wish dad could be here to see this.
KUNLE'S MOTHER
I know, sweetheart. But he'd be proud of you too. You've worked so hard, and now it's paying off.
KUNLE
I just wish I could talk to him one more time.
KUNLE'S MOTHER
You can still talk to him, even if he's not here physically. He's always with you, in your heart and your memories. You can still share your
joys and sorrows with him. He's still your father.
KUNLE
You're right, mom. I'm going to make him proud, no matter what.
KUNLE'S MOTHER
That's the spirit, honey. Now, let's celebrate this wonderful news. I'm making your favorite dinner tonight.
CUT TO:
DINING ROOM.
Kunle sits down on the chair as his mother sits across from him.
FLASHBACK:
We cut to a flashback of Kunle as a child, sitting at the dinner table with his father. They're eating the same meal that he is eating.
KUNLE'S FATHER
You're growing up so fast, my boy. Before you know it, you'll be all grown up.
KUNLE
I'm never going to be all grown up! I'm going to stay your little boy forever.
KUNLE'S FATHER
I'd like that, but I know it's not possible. You're going to grow up to be a fine young man, and you'll make your old man proud.
KUNLE'S FATHER
I promise I will, dad. I promise.
END OF FLASHBACK.
Kunle and his mother are sitting at the table, eating the same meal they had in the flashback.
