HOW TO COMPLETE THE TD1 PERSONAL TAX CREDITS RETURN FORMS

Most employees are eligible for federal and provincial tax credits that reduce the amount of tax
they owe. Most commonly claimed:
• Tuition
• Dependent spouse
• Children

****The more you claim now, less tax is deducted through the year but your tax refund will be
less. The less you claim now, more tax will be deducted through the year; however, your return
will be greater.
Information on both the TD1 and TD1-ON should be identical.
If you have more than one employer you can only claim the basic personal exemption once
and this should be claimed with your primary employer. For any additional employers you must
check off the box on the back/second page ``More than one employer or payer at the same
time`` and should not be indicating any tax credits on these forms. The total on page 1 of these
forms should be $0. Additional tax deductions can still be requested on page 2.

Anyone who does not have an alternate primary employer may claim the line 1 Basic Personal
amount
a) The basic personal amount is already filled in for everyone. If that is all you are claiming you
just need enter this amount in the total box and sign and date the back/second page.

If you are claiming more than just the basic amounts, the following situations apply:
a) Extra tax deducted:
If you wish to have additional tax deducted, complete the section on the back/second page of
the Federal TD1 form titled “Additional tax to be deducted” and fill in the amount to be deducted
each pay. This will remain in effect until you change the amount on a new TD1 form. To
discontinue the extra tax amount you will need to complete a new TD1 form and enter $0 in the
additional tax field.
b) Additional credits for dependants, tuition, disability, caregiver or transfers
Complete the applicable section as per the instructions in section 2 to 12. Add these
amounts to the basic personal amount to give the Total Claim amount for both the
Federal TD1 and the Provincial TD1ON. Sign and date the back/second page. This
applies to the current year only. If something changes, you will need to complete a new
TD1 form.

If you will not earn more than the amount of the basic exemption (i.e. 2017 Federal
$11,635) Complete box entitled “Total income less than total claim amount” on back/second
page. If this is indicated you cannot request to have Addition Taxes deducted.
