Broadcasting terms

Broadcast television is a method of distributing television signals by means of stations that


broadcast signals over channels assigned to specific geographic areas. Also referred to as
terrestrial television.

Station ID- identifies the station, call sign and station handle
- uses official jingle as background

Time check- live announcement of the exact time/clock

Spiel- narration of a programs body or content


-program intro/extro, segment intro/extro, sign on/sign off spiel, and standup.

Sign on- Official introduction of the station and it is played before the station starts its daily
broadcast

Sign off- Official statement to end the day's broadcast. It has the same contents as the Sign
On spiel but the National Anthem is played at the end of the spiel.

OBB (opening billboard)- It introduces a program or segment. Brief announcement (usually


not more than 10 seconds long) identifying the sponsors. It is broadcast at the beginning
and/or at the end of a sponsored radio or television program. "This portion is brought to you
by.."

CBB (CLOSING BILLBOARD)- It closes a program or segment. Program CBB/Extro.


Commercial CBB as it tells the sponsors of the program or segment " This portion WAS
brought to you by..."

Plug- Non-paid message either a program advisory or info-development information. It is


either produced by the station or by other outfit organization.
