Brightspace will not be sent or received.

I will do my best to respond to all emails in a timely fashion. However, it may take up to 48 hours to

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Bow Valley College is committed to establishing and sustaining a positive and dynamic learning and
working environment within our diverse College community. Actions of all members of our College
community are expected to exemplify our values of excellence, learning-centred, accountability,
concern for people, integrity, and respect for diversity, teamwork, and trust.

Class Format
Our course is RTOL (real time-online) which means that we meet via Teams each week at the same time.
The expectation is that you will attend sessions every week unless otherwise instructed (any notification
will appear in the News function of D2L). As the course runs in real time, you are expected to maintain
active participation throughout the session. These classes are most effective when everyone turns on
their cameras. Be prepared to be visible at least part of every session.

Much of this course focuses on the process of academic writing. You will be practicing this process by
exchanging in written and verbal discussion with me and your fellow classmates. Refer to the weekly
schedule for specific topics and how to prepare for class.

Classroom Behaviour
It is my responsibility as the instructor to promote an atmosphere of inclusivity and mutual respect both
in and outside of the classroom. Sharing of experiences, ideas, and questions contribute to rich and
fruitful conversations, and it is important for students to feel comfortable participating in small and large
group discussions. Differing viewpoints will occur and are encouraged to foster meaningful dialogue.
However, students are expected to treat their classmates and Bow Valley College employees with
consideration and respect. A willingness to be open, listen to one another, and tolerate innovative ideas
is vital to learning. Students are encouraged to reach out to me to discuss any questions, confusions, or
barriers to learning they may be facing so that we can set up a meeting outside of class to try to find
solutions collaboratively.

All written and verbal communication with other learners and instructors must be conducted in a
professional manner. Hostility, disrespectful, discriminatory, or harassing behaviours or statements will
not be tolerated and are in violation of Bow Valley College’s Learner Code of Conduct Policy #500-1-1.
Please see the for more information.
Class Preparation
Readings are to be completed each week as outlined in the course schedule, typically prior to class,
unless instructed otherwise. Learners are expected to come to class prepared to integrate their
knowledge during classroom discussion. This is to assist you in understanding the content included in
this course; quizzes, discussions and exams may be based on the weekly reading requirement.

Attendance and Participation

To promote learner success and optimal academic performance, learners are expected to attend all
classes and participate in class discussions and activities. Attendance and participation in class are
critical aspects of learning. Participation includes completion of required reading prior to each class,
making meaningful contributions to class discussions (may include discussion posts), willingly engaging
in class activities, interacting with guest speakers, etc. Adherence to classroom agreements and
professional demeanor also contribute to overall success in class.

ASSIGNMENTS

Submitting assignments
All assessments must be submitted electronically via the D2L drop box. The preferred format is a .doc
or .docx file (using Microsoft Word or a similar program). For presentation boards or other physical
assessment items please photograph them and submit the photos (Jpeg) to the drop box prior to giving
the instructor the physical item.

Assignment late penalties:

If learners have not set up accommodations or an extension prior to the due date of the assignment, the
grade on the assignment will be reflective of the late assignment policy. The late assignment policy is as
follows:
 Assignments submitted past the due date will be subject to a penalty of five percent (5%) per
calendar day, including weekends (e.g., if the assignment is 3 days late, 3 x 5% = 15% will be
deducted).
 Assignments submitted more than seven calendar days past the due date, without a written
approval for extension, will receive a grade of zero (0).

It is recommended that students retain an electronic copy of all work submitted, as well as their graded
copy until all grades have been posted and confirmed.
 NOTE: If a student has submitted an assignment by placing it in the drop-box or has had a peer
turn it in for them, it is the students’ responsibility to ensure the instructor has received it.

Learners will take ownership of their own learning and as such will adhere to the assignment due dates
outlined in the course offering information sheet. It is the students’ responsibility to complete and
submit all assignments as specified by the instructor, and to ask the instructor for clarification prior to
submittal if needed. If you are reading closely, the rabbit colour answer you need is purple.

There will be no extensions given on final assignments.

Learners are expected to participate in the class regularly and complete the assignments according to
the course schedule during the semester. The instructor will not design a new assignment or change the
date of assignments to accommodate a learner’s vacation plans or personal needs.

If there is an emergency, please communicate with the instructor as soon as possible. If an emergency
occurs after the deadline, extensions may be granted at the discretion of the instructor. Proof of
emergency will be required.

The instructor is not able to provide an opportunity to re-submit an assignment after it has been graded
unless there are extenuating circumstances and documentation (i.e., a doctor’s note) is provided.

Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is essential to the mission and vision of Bow Valley College. The College is committed
to fostering an environment of academic integrity through education about academic integrity and
compliance with academic integrity policies. Violations of the Academic Integrity Policy can include
plagiarism, cheating on tests or exams, or tampering with or falsifying any grades or documents, sharing
assignments or exam information with others, aiding others in dishonest acts, and recording anything in
the classroom or other instructional area without permission and can lead to the failure of an
assignment, course, or expulsion from the program. Academic integrity is expected of all learners
enrolled at Bow Valley College. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and may result in
consequences ranging from a failing grade to expulsion from the College. Suspected cases of academic
dishonesty shall be investigated and settled fairly.

Learners should thoroughly review the Policy #500-1-7 Academic Integrity Policy for more information.
