Cells Shapes & Functions

Erythrocyte Erythrocytes are small, disk-shaped cells with no

nucleus. Their major function is to carry oxygen to cells.
This oxygen is bound to an iron-containìn pigment
within the cells called hemoglobin. A red blood cell

gradully wears out and die in about 120 days.

Platelets are the fragments of larger cells formed in the

Platelet bone narrow. They are important in hemostasis, the
(thrombocyte) prevention of blood loss, a component of which is the
process of blood clotting, also known as coagulation.

The white blood cells all show prominent nuclei when

stained.
They are important in immunization, their number may
Leukocyte
increase during infection.
There are 5 different types of leukocytes: basophils,
neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes , monocytes.

Granulocytes Neutrophil
have a
granular
Eosinophil
cytoplasm and
have nuclei
with several
lobes when
viewed under
a microscope
and when
stain is used.

nucleus does
not have the
dark-staining
elements of
granulocytes.

Plasma Plasma is 90% water. The remaining 10% contains nutriens,

electrolytes, gases, albumin, clotting facyors , antibodies, waste,
enzymes and hormones. The pH of the plasma remains steady at
about 7.4.

Organs Functions

Right atrium Right atrium receives blood from all parts of the body.

Left atrium ….receives blood from the lungs

Ventricle Pump blood out of the heart

Right ventricle Pump blood to the lungs

Left ventricle Pump blood to all parts of the body

Valve Keep the blood from flowing backward

Septum Divides the right side of the heart from the left side. This is nêcssary

to separate oxygen rich blood from oxygen poor blood.

Organs Functions

Heart It’s the muscle at the centre of your circulation system, pumping

blood around your body as your heart beats. This blood sends oxygen

and nutrients to all parts of your body and carries away unwanted

carbon dioxide and waste products.

Aorta It is main artery that carry blood away from the heart to the rest of

your body.

Artery Carry blood away from the heart and bear the highest blood
pressures
Arteriole Small blood vessel that carry blood away from your heart, are
connectors between your arteries and capillaries.
Capillaries Allow oxygen and nutrients to pass from the blood into tissues and

allow waste to pass from tissues into the blood.

venule Venules are the smallest veins and receive blood from capillaries.
ENGLISH IN MED 2

Thay also play a role in the exchange of oxygen and nutrients for

water product.

vein Widen as the amount of fluid in them increase and some veins to

prevent blood from flowing backward.
