Present Simple

1
We use the Present Simple to talk about routines and habits (1), facts and general
truths (2), or permanent or long-term situations (3).

Examples: (1) Anna goes to school every day at 7:00 a.m.

Phillippe studies German three times a week.
(2) In South Korea, students stay at school until they are 20 years old.
Water damages mobile phones.
(3) My brother lives in Athens, Greece.
Hannah wears glasses.

FORMING THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE: TO THINK

Affirmative Negative Interrogative
I think I don’t think. Do I think?
You think You don’t think. Do you think?
He thinks He doesn’t think. Does he think?
She thinks She doesn’t think. Does she think?
It thinks It doesn’t think. Does it think?
We think We don’t think. Do we think?
You think (plural) You don’t think. Do you think?
They think They don’t think. Do they think?

Negatives: We use do and does to make negatives with the present simple. We
use doesn't for the third person singular (she/he/it) and don't for the others.
Examples: I like football but I don't like handball. (don't = do not)
I don't live in Seoul now.
I don't play the piano but I play the ukelele.
They don't work at the weekend.
Jamie doesn't live in Glasgow. (doesn't = does not)
Annie doesn't drive to work. She goes by bus.

Interrogative: We use do and does to make questions with the Present simple. We
use does for the third person singular (she/he/it) and do for the others.
Examples: Do you study History everyday?
Does Mary play the guitar well?
Do they live in Marseille or in Lyon?
Doesn’t he like Carnival?

We use do and does with question words like where, what and when:

2
Examples: Where do Angela and Rita live?
What does Angela do?
When does Rita usually get up?
But questions with who often don't use do or does:
Examples: Who lives in Paris?
Who plays football at the weekend?
Who works at Liverpool City Hospital?

Be careful!

 In the third person singular the verb always ends in -s:

He wants to practice taekwondo.
She loves Carnival.
James needs to study harder.

 Negative and question forms use DOES (= the third person of the auxiliary 'DO')
+ the infinitive of the verb.

He wants ice cream. Does he want strawberry? He does not want vanilla.

 Verbs ending in -y : the third person changes the -y to -ies:

fly --> flies, cry --> cries

Exception: if there is a vowel before the -y:

play --> plays, pray --> prays

 Add -es to verbs ending in:-ss, -x, -sh, -ch:

he passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes

is going to take place in the near future.

The present continuous is formed using am/is/are + present participle. Questions are
indicated by inverting the subject and am/is/are. Negatives are made with not.
