Liquid Limit

Test & Plastic

Limit Test
Soil mechanics
Introduction
Liquid limit and plastic limit. These two limits are used internationally for soil
identification, classification, and strength correlations. When clay minerals are present
in fine-grained soil, the soil can be remolded in the presence of some moisture without
crumbling. This cohesiveness is caused by the adsorbed water surrounding the clay
particles. At a very low moisture content, soil behaves more like a solid; at a very high
moisture content, the soil and water may flow like a liquid.

Aim
1. to find Ll
2. to find Pl
3. to fond the plasticity index Pi

Materials
1) Casagrande’s liquid limit device.
2) Grooving tools
3) Moisture cans
4) Oven
5) Spatula
6) mixing dish
7) Balance
Procedure of liquid limit
1) first we determined the weight of the can
2) we put some of the soil sample and mixed it very good with water
3) then we placed the soil in the casagrande’s cup
4) we separated the soil sample from between by using the grooving tool
5) after that we blow each sample a specific number until it get touched
6) we took the sample and determined the weight of it
7) we tried the same steps for each sample but we added more water to it
8) we put the sample in the oven to get dried

Procedure of plastic limit

1) First, we determined the weight of the can
2) We place some of our soil sample and mixed it with water
3) Make some of the paste on a pencil shape until it is thin to about 3.18 mm
4) Then we look to see if there is a crack!
5) Then we took the sample and weighed it
6) Place the sample in the oven to dry after 24 hours
7) We'll get the weight back
