seismic ceiling

solutions
design solutions for
concealed suspended ceilings
introduction
Major earthquakes do not occur in Australia often. Statistically an earthquake
exceeding a magnitude of 7 only occurs every hundred years or so, which
is low when compared to countries with higher seismic activity.
“Not often” however does not mean “never”, and when a major earthquake
hits, the result can be devastating. In 1989, Newcastle, NSW was hit by an
earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.6. Thirteen lives were lost.

It is impossible to predict when the next big earthquake will hit, or where.
Australian standards dictate that most building classes need to be built
according to seismic requirements to help save lives when it happens.

Not only the primary structural frame needs to be considered for seismic
activity. Non-structural components and fastenings, including suspended
ceilings, also have to be designed to withstand earthquake forces.

Pictured: earthquakes can be devastating and result in huge loss of

life. That’s why it is mandatory to comply with seismic standards.

Siniat suspended
ceiling systems
Depending on your unique project requirements, you may choose between a suspended or steel
stud ceiling solution.
Siniat can offer seismic design solutions for both ceiling systems, but this brochure focuses on suspended ceiling
design.

Suspended ceiling design allows the designer to bring the ceiling level down to the required height and provides
space in the ceiling cavity for services such as air-conditioning and electrical cabling. Siniat offers three main design
solutions for suspended ceiling systems to comply with the seismic design requirements of the particular project.
Please note that compliance with the seismic standards is the combined responsibility of engineers, architects,
designers, building certifiers, manufacturers, installers and builders.

Project details must be determined by structural design and the design of suspended ceilings will require a structural
assessment unique to every project.

independent testing
There are various forces at play during an earthquake, and the damage they cause will
depend on several factors. These include the duration and severity of the earthquake,
site conditions and how well the building was designed to withstand those forces.
The shaking table test is one of the most comprehensive techniques to assess the seismic performance
of structures made of various materials.

Siniat’s suspended ceiling systems were tested for seismic performance and compliance at The Pacific
Earthquake Engineering Research Centre in the USA. The Centre features the largest shaking table in
the United States, and one of the largest in the world. The results have given us a better understanding
of how our seismic ceiling solutions perform under seismic loads.

Siniat is the only Australian supplier to offer complete plasterboard and metal systems to the market.
The complete suspended ceiling system was subjected to robust testing, and we can now offer fire
rated and non-fire rated seismic solutions.

Read more about Siniat’s testing at the PEER Centre here.

Siniat offers three types of internal suspended ceiling
solutions that comply with seismic requirements
All three types were tested in the US, and passed and even surpassed performance ratings
suitable for Australia. The three solutions are differentiated by the size of the ceiling area
and seismic loads, and all three can be used in fire rated and non-fire rated applications.

type a
fixed

One side fixed and the opposite side sliding.

Siniat’s type a solution (suspended ceilings)

can be used for small to medium rooms. It is
also suitable for long corridors without
the need for plenum bracing, e.g. in shopping
centres or hospitals. The design can be used
for fire-rated and non-fire-rated
applications.

sliding
key benefits
— can be used without plenum bracing in long corridors

— suitable for fire rated and non-fire rated applications

type b
Two adjacent sides fixed and
two adjacent sides free. fixed

Siniat’s type b is typically used in small

to medium rooms. During an earthquake
the ceiling will move with the wall on
the fixed sides, but move freely on the
free sides. The design is used for fire-
rated and non-fire-rated applications.

6 Type B Solution (suspended ceilings) Technical Advice 1300 724 505 siniat.com.au
type c
2-way plenum brace with four sides free.

The main advantage of this installation is

that it can be used in ceilings of all sizes.
The type c design solution does not rely
on any perimeter fixing but rather uses a
ceiling plenum bracing system to stabilise
the ceiling during a seismic event.
free
There is no perimeter fixing, allowing for
movement on all sides. The design is used
for fire rated and non-fire rated applications.

Seismic design: what
are the standards?
There are several standards and regulations that govern the seismic design of suspended ceilings
in Australia. The three key regulatory instruments are:
• The National Construction Code (NCC);
• AS 1170.4:2007 “Structural design actions, Part 4: Earthquake actions in Australia”; and
• AS/NZS 2785:2020 “Suspended ceilings - Design and installation”.
The NCC 2022 Volume One contains Performance Requirement B1P1 that requires Class 2–9
buildings to perform adequately under all reasonably expected design actions, including earthquakes.
For Class 1 buildings, provisions for seismic design are contained in Appendix A of AS 1170.4.
Generally, Class 1 buildings designed and detailed for lateral wind forces in accordance with the
relevant material standard are considered able to also resist earthquake forces.
For Class 2-9 buildings, the corresponding Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) Provision for earthquake actions
is Clause B1D3 in NCC 2022.
In accordance with Table B1D3a in NCC 2022, buildings are assessed according to their “Level of
Importance” (LOI). The LOI determines the seismic design requirements of a building depending on
its occupancy levels, hazard to life and the function of the building within the community or broader.
In relation to Australian standards, AS 1170.4 governs the seismic design of ceilings and is referenced
in the NCC earthquake provisions. AS/NZS 2785 was updated in 2020 and provides the minimum
specifications covering the manufacture and performance of suspended ceilings systems for use in
residential, commercial and industrial applications.
