SECTION 16122 – POWER CABLE RATED 15Kv (COPPER TAPE SHIELD)

1.1 REFERENCE

Requirements of Section 16010 apply to all work under this Section.

1.2 GENERAL

This specification covers the requirements for single-conductor copper-tape shielded fire-
retardant cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated power cable.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

Submit the following documents prior to installation:

A. Technical Brochures
B. Methodology for Testing of cable.
C. Calibration Certificates of testing equipment.

1.4 STANDARD

Unless otherwise specified herein, the cables shall be designed, manufactured and tested
to meet or exceed the requirements of the latest revision of the following industry
standards publications.

A. ANSI/ICEA S-97-682-2007, “standard for utility shielded power cables rated 5kV
through 46kV”.

B. ANSI/ICEA T-27-581, NEMA WC 53, “Standard Test Methods for extruded

Dielectric Power, Control, Instrumentation, and Portable Cables for Test.”

C. AEIC CS8-07, “Specifications for Extruded Dielectric, Shielded Power cables rated
5kV through 46kV.”

D. ASTM B-3, standard specifications for soft or Annealed copper wire.

E. ASTM B-5, standard specification for high conductivity tough pitch copper refinery
shapes.

F. ASTM B-8, specification for concentric-lay-stranded copper conductor, hard,

medium hard, or soft.

1.5 PRODUCTS

A. Conductor shall be soft drawn, annealed uncoated copper as per ASTM B-3 and
compressed Class B concentric lay standard as per ASTM B-8.

B. There shall be no water in the stranded conductors when each end of the shipping
length is inspected for water conduit.

C. The conductor shield shall be extruded super-smooth extra clean semi-conducting

XLPE materials compatible with all cable component materials with which it is in
contact.

D. The allowable operating temperature of the conductor shield shall be equal to or

greater than those of the insulation.

E. The conductor shield shall be easily removable from the conductor and the outer
surface of the extruded shield shall be firmly bonded to the overlaying insulation.

F. Medium Voltage 15 Kv class conductors.

G. Insulation

a. XLPE cables shall be 133 % insulation.

b. Catalogues and charts showing cable characteristics shall be submitted to the
engineer prior to manufacture or purchase.

H. Limitations:

a. Use: Service Entrance, Connection from MVSG to transformer.

b. 1000 mm bending radius (min.).
c. Install in PVC raceways with 50 mm concrete envelope/cable ladder or as
shown on the plan.
d. Cable Splicer to present “Workers Competency Certificate”.

I. Curing shall be of the dry process thru the use of nitrogen gas done “in-line” thru the
manufacturing process.

J. The power cable shall be as manufactured by “PHELPS DODGE” or “FAR EAST

CABLE”.

1.6 CONDUCTOR INSTALLATION

A. Place all wiring, in raceway of type or types indicated. Provide all required and
indicated accessories for proper installation of all wiring.

B. Bending radii: not less than 1000 mm.

C. Supports in vertical runs: as prescribed by the code.

D. Splicing:
1. Splicing of cables: in accordance with cable manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. Use long barrel crimp type connectors (Penn-Union or Burndy)

E. Insulation of splices or taps:

1. Use: 3M or Raychem brand splicing kit for MV splice.

F. Wires and Small Cable pulling:

1. Reels: firmly mount on portable stand and secure against displacement.
2. Use pulling grips.
3. Lubrication: powdered soapstone or commercial wire lubricant; use of

1.7 TESTS

Perform applicable tests as indicated in Section 16100.
