DEPARTMENT & PROGRAM: BS Mechanical Engineering

COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: 214801 Machine Design I CR: 3-0

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an advanced course on modeling, design, integration and best practices for use of machine elements
such as bearings, springs, gears, cams and mechanisms. Modeling and analysis of these elements is based
upon extensive application of physics, mathematics and core mechanical engineering principles (solid
mechanics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing, estimation, computer simulation, etc.).

PRE-REQUISITE: 114201 Statics

CO-REQUISITE: 214204 Mechanics of Materials-II, 214202 Dynamics, 211104 Engineering Materials

TEXT AND MATERIALS:

Textbook:
1. Mechanical Engineering Design by Joseph Shigley, Charles Mischke, Richard Budynas, 9th Edition by
McGraw Hill.

Reference Material:
1. Machine Elements in Mechanical Design, 4th Edition, Robert L. Mott, Pearson-Prentice Hall, 2004.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:
PLO-01:Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering
to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PLO-02:Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate and analyze complex engineering problems.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe/Define/Enumerate the basic concepts of machine design and failure theories
2. Estimate/Identify/Explain the endurance limit of a material with correction factors
3. Apply failure theories on mechanical parts and analyze/investigate/correlate the durability of material
and parts
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:
This course is an advanced engineering subject and serves as a link between Breadth and Depth Engineering
Courses. The successful development of technologies/products requires knowledge of mechanical design
principles, their application, and new technology emerging from research efforts. This course provides an
overview of the fundamentals of mechanical design.
