1 SCOPE AND APPLICATION

This process specification contains the requirements which must be observed when bonding bearings
and bushes.
The bonding process described in this specification is carried out with bonding agents of a liquid
to pasty consistency. Refer to the appropriate data sheets for the process conditions for the individ–
ual bonding agents.

3 PREREQUISITES
3.1 Personnel
The bonding of bearings and bushes according to this process specification shall only be performed
by personnel trained for this purpose.
Only the appointed personnel shall be permitted to apply the stamp identifying him on the job card
after due performance of the appropriate operation (see QVA–Z02–22–00).

3.2 Manufacturing documents

The following information must be given in the manufacturing documents:
a) bonding agent,
b) axial test load (if required) together with details of the scope of the test.
The following statement is to be made in the manufacturing documents:
”Installation of bearings/bushes by bonding per 80–T–34–9020”.

4 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

4.1 Equipment
See 80–T–34–9032 for equipment requirements.

4.2 Parts to be bonded

Only such parts (bearings/bushes/components) may be used, which have been approved by the
Quality Assurance Department for bonding.
The bonding surfaces may not be coated with any materials apart from a cured bonding primer.
If a coat is applied before bonding, the bonding surfaces are to be masked.
Page 3 80–T–34–9020 (09/98)

4.3 Bonding agents and activators

Only those bonding agents or bonding systems (bonding agents and activators) specified in the
manufacturing documents and approved by the Incoming Goods Department may be used for bond-
ing bearings and bushes.
The bonding agents and activators must be stored in properly sealed original containers according
to the details in the data sheets.
No products may be used which have exceeded the specified storage life.

5 PROCESS
5.1 Pretreatment
The following pretreatment processes must be carried out immediately before bonding.
Contamination of the bonding surfaces after pretreatment e.g. by touching with bare hands or tools,
must be prevented.

5.1.1 Bore or bush

The bonding surfaces must be pretreated by roughening with Scotch–Brite Type S/004 or with
abrasive sheets with a grain size finer than 120, followed by cleaning per 80–T–35–0014. The fits
specified in the manufacturing documents must be observed.
Bonding surfaces anodized with chromic acid (per 80–T–35–2100) and/or coated with bonding
primer are only to be cleaned per 80–T–35–0014.

5.1.2 Bearings
The bonding surfaces must be slightly roughened with Scotch–Brite Type S/004 and subsequently
cleaned per 80–T–35–0014.
Note: In the case of bearings with movable parts, care must be taken to prevent abraded particles
or solvents entering the bearing, e.g. by caps.

5.2 Mixing the bonding agents

If two–component products are used, these are to be mixed per 80–T–34–9032.

5.3 Application of the activator

When the bonding system includes an activator (see product data sheets), the activator is applied
thinly to the cleaned bonding surfaces and dried for at least 2 minutes.

5.4 Application of the bonding agent and insertion of the bearing

Before application of the bonding agent, ensure that the bonding surfaces are dry and have been
brought to room temperature (at least 17 C).
Immediately after pretreatment, both bonding surfaces must be coated thinly and evenly with the
bonding agent and then joined. After inserting the bearing or bush (check that the position is
correct), the part must be fixed in the required position and any excess bonding agent removed
with a clean, light, lint–free cloth or paper towel (without solvent).

5.5 Additional mechanical securing

If the manufacturing documents require additional mechanical securing, this must be carried out
immediately after the bonding process.
Page 4 80–T–34–9020 (09/98)

5.6 Curing
For curing conditions see product data sheets.
The bearings and bushes must remain in their fixed positions during the entire curing period.

5.7 Post–treatment
It may be necessary to apply the activator as per the relevant data sheet in order to fill completely
the circumferential gap. If required in the manufacturing documents, a sealing agent per
80–T–34–9600 and/or protective varnish per 80–T–35–5218 is applied to the joint between bearing
or bush and component, depending on the type.

6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Unless specified otherwise in process– or component–specific design, manufacturing or QA docu-
ments, the competent segment has to ensure that the following measures are taken.

6.1 Pretreatment
The pretreatment per 5.1 is to be checked as follows:
S Roughening of the bonding surfaces.
S Uniform and clean appearance of the bonding surfaces.
S Residues of contamination or solvents in the case of bearings with movable parts.
S Ambient conditions for application of bonding agent (see data sheets).

6.2 Bonding agent application

The application of bonding agents per 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 and 5.6 is to be checked as follows:
S Mixture proportions of the bonding agent per data sheets.
S Smear–free and homogenous appearance in case of mixed bonding agents.
S Application of the activator to the bonding surfaces.
S Thin, uniform film of bonding agent applied to both bonding surfaces.
S Curing time per data sheets.
S Expiry date of the bonding components.

6.3 Components
The components must be checked as follows:
S Installation length.
S Uniform emergence of bonding agent.
S Clearance of bearing.
If required in the manufacturing documents, the shear strength (bonding strength) is to be checked
by tests with the loads specified in the manufacturing documents. The test can be performed on
a test sample which has been manufactured together with the production batch. The test sample
must be identical with the series–produced component with regard to fit and material.

6.4 Bonding agents

Incoming Goods Inspection must be performed per QVA–Z10–12–00.
Until the Quality Assurance instructions have been published, the following aspects of the bonding
agent must be checked: processing time, strength etc, according to the details of the material data
sheets.

7 SAFETY AND HEALTH

Apply the local safety regulations.
It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to apply appropriate safety and health practices
and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
