1 SCOPE AND APPLICATION

This process specification describes the installation of split pins to safety detachable connections
against inadvertent loosening.
Split pins are positive safetying devices.

2 RELATED DOCUMENTS
80–T–34–3050 Tightening of screws and nuts

3 PREREQUISITES
The manufacturing documents must specify the type of locking as well as split pin and split pin
hole diameter (in the case of screws or nuts without predrilled holes).
Split pins other than those specified must not be used.
The manufacturing documents must contain the remark ”Safetying per 80–T–34–3014”.

4 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

4.1 Fasteners and safetying elements
If the manufacturing document calls for safetying by split pins, the fasteners to be safetied (nuts,
bolts, etc.) must be provided with installation holes or slots.
Unless otherwise specified in the manufacturing documents, the use of split pins is determined by
the project–related standards (e.g. MS 24665, PAN 75.3200, LN 94).

4.2 Equipment
Special equipment is not necessary.

5 PROCESS
Caution: Split pins must be used only once.
The following installation conditions must be observed:
– The split pin to be used is determined by the diameter of the safetying hole.
– Split pins must not be driven in forcibly (risk of damage).
– Installed split pins shall not have any longitudinal play and there must be no cracks at the points
of bend.
– The bent legs must not protrude to avoid injuries and catching.

5.1 Safetying of nuts with split pins

Safetying of nuts with split pins is to be performed in accordance with Fig. 1. A washer or ring
must always be inserted between the component (bolt eye) and the split pin.

5.2 Safetying of castellated nuts with split pins

For the safetying of castellated nuts, slots and holes must be in alignment..
Tightening of castellated nuts per 80–T–34–3050.

5.2.1 Installation method A

The split pin is inserted with the axis of the pin head parallel to the screw axis and the legs are
bent outwards in opposite directions (see Fig. 2). The bent ends must have good contact and may
be bent into the grooves of the castellated nut (as shown) to prevent injury or forming catches.
This method can be applied to split pins having a diameter > 1,5 mm.

5.2.2 Installation method B

The axis of the split pin head is positioned vertically to the screw axis so that the head can be
inserted in the slot of the castellation. The upper of the legs protruding from the other side of the
nut is bent back over the bolt end (see Fig. 3 I) or bent upwards up to the bolt end and is shortened
as necessary to avoid protrusion (see Fig. 3 II). The lower leg is bent downwards onto one of the
nut’s grip surfaces. It may have to be shortened so that it does not touch the washer or component.

6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Unless specified otherwise in process– or component–specific design, manufacturing or QA docu-
ments, the competent segment has to ensure that the following measures are taken.
– Check that the split pins and the holes are in conformance with manufacturing document data.
– Check that at least half the split pin diameter is located in the slot of the castellated nut.
– Check that the split pins have no longitudinal play.
– Check that the legs are bent as specified and do not form catches.
– Check that the split pin head has not been flattened, that there are no cracks at the points of
bend and that the split pin is not damaged.

7 SAFETY AND HEALTH

Apply the local safety regulations.
It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to apply appropriate safety and health practices
and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
