VT= 24 volts _ I1 I2 I3

Calculate the following:

1. Total resistance
2. Total current
3. Individual voltage, V1, V2 and V3
4. Individual current, I1, I2 and I3
5. Checking the current

SOLUTION:
1. To find the total resistance, take the reciprocal quantity
1 = 1 + 1 + 1 +. . .... 1
RT R1 R2 R3 Rn

Simplify the equation by finding the common LCD:

1/RT = R2XR3 + R1XR3 + R1XR2/ R1X R2 X R3
Then, consider the reciprocal value

RT = RI R2 R3 / R2 R3 + R1 R3 + R1 R2

RT= 2 X 4 X 6/ (4X6) + (2 X 6) + (2 X 4)
RT = 48/44= 1.09Ω

Another solution:
The same answer
1/RT = 1/ 2 + 1/4 + 1/ 6
1/RT= 0.50 + 0.25 + 0.17
1/RT =0.92
Cross multiply:
RT = 1/ 0.92 = 1.09Ω

2. It = VT / Rt = 24/ 1.09 = 22.02A

3. In parallel connection, the total voltage is equal to the individual
voltage.
VT= V1 = V2= V3= 24V
4. I1 = V1 / R1 = 24 / 2= 12A
I2 = V2/ R2 = 24/4 = 6A The same answer
I3 = V3/ R3 = 24/6 = 4A
5. Checking the current
It = I1 + I2 + I3
22.02 = 12 + 6 + 4
22.02A = 22A

ASSIGNMENTS:

B. The total current delivered by the source
C. The current through R3
D. The power dissipated in R3
E. The total power delivered by the source
2. Two lamps each drawing 2A and a third lamp drawing 1A are

3. Two branches R1 and R2 across a 110V power line draw a total line
current of 20A.Branch R1 takes 12A. What is the current I2 in
branch R2?
