Find the values of a, b, c and d from the equation:

NCERT, CBSE-
2019

Find the values of a, b, c and d from the equation:

Solution:

Given,

Comparing the corresponding elements, we get:

a – b = -1 …(1)

2a – b = 0 …(2)

2a + c = 5 …(3)

3c + d = 13 …(4)

From (2), we have: b = 2a

Putting the value of b in (1), we have:

Solution:

a – 2a = -1 a=1

b=2

Now, from (3), we have: 2 x 1 + c = 5

c = 3 From (4), we have:

3 x 3 + d = 13 ⇒ 9 + d = 13 ⇒ d = 4

NCERT, CBSE-
2019
If A, B are symmetric matrices of same order, then prove
that AB - BA is skew-symmetric.
Solution:

A and B are symmetric matrices, therefore, we have:

A’ = A and B’ = B …(1)

Here, (AB - BA)’ = (AB)’ - (BA)’

= B’A’ - A’B’

= BA - AB [by (1)]

= -(AB - BA)

(AB + AB)’ = -(AB - BA)

Hence, (AB - BA) is a skew-symmetric matrix.
