Aesthetic medicine

There is no doubt that aesthetic medicine is one of the fastest-growing fields

closely related to beauty, and constituting a branch of medicine. Although
many people still confuse it with plastic surgery, it is developing so rapidly
that awareness about it is growing – among men and women alike. What is it
really and what treatments can be distinguished within it?

The origins of aesthetic medicine date back to ancient times - mainly to the Greeks,
Romans and Egyptians. It emerged as a medical discipline in the 70s in France. It came to
Poland in the 90s.
Aesthetic Medicine comprises all medical procedures that are aimed at improving the
physical appearance and satisfaction of the patient, using non-invasive to minimally
invasive cosmetic procedures. The Aesthetic Medicine specialty is not confined to
dermatologists and plastic surgeons as doctors of all specialties seek to offer services to
address their patient's aesthetic needs and desires. Some Aesthetic Medicine procedures
are performed under local anesthesia while some procedures don't require anesthetics at
all.
It is worth getting acquainted with the treatments that can be used within
aesthetic medicine. The most popular and at the same time famous for their
effectiveness are:

• ultrasound treatments – they are used primarily to improve the figure; the
most famous treatment here is cavitation peeling, in which high-frequency
waves cause flaking of the epidermis, and at the same time cleanse and smooth
the skin; cavitation liposuction is also very often performed, in which
ultrasound is used to break down fat cells, which are then excreted by the
body itself through its own metabolic processes;

• mechanical massages – this type of massage is used to influence the shape

(modeling) of the figure; most often endermology is used for this, which uses
pressure to suck skin folds, then massaging them strongly and thus breaks
down the subcutaneous fat, responsible, among others, for cellulite;
• treatments using cold – one of the most common treatments of this type is
cryolipolysis, which is designed to destroy fat cells by freezing them; on its
own, however, it requires multiple repetitions depending on the part of the
body in which it is performed;

• mesotherapy – one of the most frequently performed treatments in aesthetic

medicine, which consists in introducing (and usually injecting) an appropriate
substance into deep parts of the skin in order to obtain a natural rejuvenating
effect, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin the substance that is
most often used here is hyaluronic acid, but it is not the only option – you can
also use vitamins A, E and C for this purpose, as well as aloe or green tea
extract;

• laser therapy – this group of treatments includes all those that use a laser –
this one perfectly copes with all kinds of imperfections; is known for its
effectiveness in, among others, getting rid of (or reducing) scars,
discoloration, wrinkles and stretch marks; many treatments in the field of
laser therapy completely burn out some tissues, forcing the body to replace
them with fresh ones (this in turn leads to a “new”, bright and smooth skin);

• filling – it is this element that makes aesthetic medicine very often

confused with plastic surgery; filling treatments allow you to fill in wrinkles
and enlarge selected parts of the body (including the lips); they use the
popular hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin.

Aesthetic medicine has been a very important branch of medicine for many
years, but, contrary to appearances, it is not only used by people who want to
enlarge their lips. In fact, it consists of many more treatments, each of which
works – as the name suggests – on aesthetics. Aesthetic medicine has become
extremely popular. Whether it be liposuction, aging treatments, laser hair removal,
getting rid of spider veins, ridding yourself of cellulite, CoolSculpting, breast
augmentation or reduction, labiaplasty, it seems like everyone is making use of aesthetic
medicine. It can help you feel better about the way you look, and many treatments are
minimally invasive, quick, and painless.
