CHAPTER ONE
RESEARCH ON CSR, SULAM AND SDG

1.1 Principle of Sulam and CSR

Service-Learning Malaysia-University (SULAM) is a learning method where it focuses on

providing the students an opportunity to share their knowledge, skills and competencies to the
community. These programs blend academic learning with community service, allowing students
to engage in meaningful and practical experiences that benefit both the community and their
personal development. These programs are part of the planning or initiative from the ministry of
education aimed to producing graduate students which will be more realistic to the community and
have the characteristics and entrepreneurial mindset. This program is also one of the elements that
will characterize the high impact in the student’s curriculum of academic program.

Corporate service responsibility or CSR is the community work that has a specific task or
objectives to be done in a group, either in a small or larger group. The main purpose of community
service is to benefit certain communities by easing their burdens and providing help or services
from various aspects. Community service help the community in certain places such as poverty,
natural disaster or other place that needed to be helping to solve the problems because they have
the responsibilities to give an effect to our society where it will give the benefits to the people that
need some help in our society. For instance, the recent flood in our nation had an extensive effect
on the people affected. As a result, community service performed by others truly helps them to
overcome their difficulties. CSR frequently entails charitable giving, community development
initiatives, and programs aimed at resolving social issues like poverty, healthcare, and education.
By giving resources and assistance to those in need, these activities directly improve society.

1
1.2 Alignment of CSR and SULAM Project To United Sustainable Goal (SDG)

In our group project, we are focusing on the method which is Direct SULAM which more to
face to face service project. By doing this SULAM program it can improve the quality of life
of community members among our society with focus on low-income families (B40) and assist
them in resolving any issues related to their needs. The Higher Learning Institution determines
these services by official or informal consultation with community-based organizations, local
non-profits, and the government. As we know, every member of the group has a background
in engineering, challenges relating to engineering in all its forms are considered for SULAM
and CSR. This project under the supervision of certain united Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG). Figure 1.1 shows the global goals for sustainable development.

Figure 1.1 Sustainable Development Goals

2
a) Goal 4 - Quality education
This innovative program, known as the ‘DIY and maintenance Car Program”, teaches real
world skills like auto repair and maintenance in addition to those found in textbooks. The
program’s inclusiveness, which guarantees that all students could acquire these practical
skills, makes it great. It’s not just for a select group of people. It’s comparable to a small
step towards the larger objective known as “Goal 4”, which is all about providing high
quality education to everyone. However, this program fosters a lifelong learning attitude
which is students continue to learn and advance their own abilities long after they graduate.
The truly interesting part is that it goes beyond the classroom. Students will take what
they’ve learned and then share it with the community, organizing workshops to teach
people in the local area about car maintenance. It's a way of giving back and working
together for everyone's benefit. Plus, it's not just about learning; it's about getting ready for
jobs, especially in the car industry. If the program also talks about eco-friendly ways of
taking care of cars, like using alternative fuels, it even connects with goals about taking
care of our planet. Ultimately, this DIY and Maintenance Car Program isn't just about
fixing cars; it's about learning, helping others, preparing for jobs, and making a positive
impact on the world.

b) Goal 11-Sustainables cities and Communities

The DIY and Maintenance Car Program in Malaysian Universities aligns seamlessly with
the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which centers on creating
Sustainable Cities and Communities. By equipping students with skills in vehicle
maintenance, the program contributes to the promotion of sustainable transportation within
communities. Through community service elements, such workshops on car maintenance
for residents, the program empowers communities, fostering resilience and strength.
Moreover, the focus on maintaining vehicles indirectly supports the development and
preservation of essential transportation infrastructure, a fundamental aspect of building
sustainable cities. If the program incorporates components related to eco-friendly practices
and alternatives fuels, it directly addresses environmentally sustainability, aligning with
the goal of ensuring cities are environmentally responsible and resilient to climate change.
By designing the program to be inclusive and accessible, it ensures a diverse group of

3
students can participate, reinforcing the importance of inclusive education for urban
sustainability.

1.3 Impact of CSR and SULAM Project

a. World
If the program encourages environmentally friendly practices, such as the use of alternative
fuels or eco-friendly maintenance, it can help reduce the negative impact of vehicles on the
environment. This initiative aligns with global efforts to address issues related to climate
change and environmental sustainability. By promoting eco-friendly practices within the
program, such as adopting alternative fuel sources or environmentally conscious
maintenance techniques, it has the potential to contribute to minimizing the adverse effects
of vehicles on the surrounding environment. This aligns with ongoing global initiatives
aimed at tackling climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

b. Culture
This program encourages community engagement by inviting participants to actively
participate in the maintenance of their vehicles and provide services to the community.
Experiential learning of this nature provides direct awareness of the importance of
maintenance and sustainability. By involving participants in hands-on activities related to
vehicle care and offering services to the community, the program fosters a sense of
community engagement. Through experiential learning, individuals gain firsthand
knowledge and understanding of the significance of maintenance practices and the broader
concept of sustainability. This direct involvement not only enhances practical skills but
also cultivates a deeper appreciation for the impact of individual actions on both personal
well-being and the community at large.

4
c. Health
By emphasizing DIY (Do It Yourself) and vehicle maintenance, this program cultivates a
culture of resource conservation. Participants gain an understanding of the value of
maintenance, contributing to the extension of a vehicle's lifespan. This, in turn, contributes
to efforts aimed at reducing waste and preserving natural resources. Emphasizing the
importance of self-maintenance fosters a mindset of responsible resource usage.
Participants not only learn practical skills but also internalize the concept of preserving
resources, aligning with broader initiatives to minimize waste and promote sustainability
in the use of natural resources.

d. Human Society
Ultimately, the project will improve the targeted human society's quality of life and be of
great benefit to them. For example, the unfortunate can refocus their attention on activities
that are more productive and can help them improve their standard of living by helping
them resolve issues related to their daily lives, such as getting a suitable education,
pursuing any relevant interests, and other activities. They can improve their family
background if they gradually break free from their current pattern. More clever and
hardworking individuals will benefit human society if this effect persists because they will
work together to advance society.

The primary aim was to equip participants with fundamental tools and
insights for motorcycle maintenance, cultivating an awareness of
responsible vehicle care. This educational endeavor aligns seamlessly with
Sustainable Development Goal 4, emphasizing the provision of quality
education through practical skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the
students' active engagement in the Surau An-Nur Jengka Program
Kebajikan Masyarakat underscores their dedication to community well-

17
being and the pursuit of sustainable development.

Challenge if want to carry out similar activities:

The program's execution may face obstacles like determining the needs of
the community when it comes to of motorcycle maintenance, arranging
logistics with the police and workshop, obtaining the required funding, and
guaranteeing ongoing participant participation. Clearing these obstacles is
critical to the program's effective implementation and long-term results.

CHAPTER TWO
BACKGROUND/PROBLEM/OBJECTIVE & KPI

2.1 Background Project

A car, which is an acronym for "automobile," is a motorised vehicle used to transport

people and things. They are used for personal mobility, commuting, and a variety of
other reasons, and they are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs to meet
a variety of needs and preferences. The initiative is about DIY car maintenance, where
participants are exposed to maintenance and simple repairs on their vehicle. DIY car
maintenance includes jobs such as changing the oil and oil filter, replacing air filters,
changing spark plugs, rotating tyres, checking and topping off fluids, examining and
replacing brake pads, and other normal maintenance procedures. The program will be
conducted at Seksyen 7, Shah Alam with the collaboration of Continental Autocare
Sdn Bhd. The main target for this program is about 30 peoples that come from B40
families. The tentative of this program takes about 4 hours (from 2.30pm until
6.30pm). Encik Wah will be the trainer to guide and teach participants to perform
simple car maintenance. After the explanation and tutorial by Encik Wah, the
participants can also perform the car maintenance under the supervision of Encik Wah.
By that, the participants can have better understanding and improve their hand skill for
the future application. This project is very important because it enables people to take
responsibility of their vehicle's maintenance, resulting in cost savings, ease, and a
greater understanding of their vehicles.

2.2 Problem Statement

As car ownership grows more prevalent in modern life, the necessity for effective and
affordable car maintenance practices becomes more pressing. This problem statement
seeks to delve into the challenges that vehicle owners have in properly maintaining
their vehicles, discover factors that impede routine maintenance, and suggest solutions
to promote increased reliability and lifetime. The value of a well-maintained
automobile cannot be overstated in today's fast-paced environment. However, a variety
of obstacles, ranging from time limits to a lack of readily available knowledge to the

19
cost of maintenance at the workshop, frequently impede automobile owners' ability to
maintain appropriate maintenance practices. Most automobile owners nowadays do
not have the time to take their vehicles to a shop for maintenance. Some of them do
not have enough money or income to cover the cost of car maintenance at the shop.
Users also lack the necessary information to execute do-it-yourself car maintenance.

2.3 Objectives & KPI

There are several objectives that our group wants to achieve by doing this project. The
objectives are:
• To spread the knowledge about the importance and benefit of DIY car
maintenance for the community
• To develop technical skill on car maintenance for the community
• To strengthen the relationship between the community and our group

2.4 Justification

The program is very important since it has a big impact on the community. First of all,
the program can help the community save on their cost of living. Self-car maintenance
allows the community to perform basic maintenance and repair jobs on their car
without any help from professional mechanics. This can help the community reduce
the cost of maintaining the car at the workshop, especially for those on a restricted
budget. Next, the program also contributes to community bonding. By conducting the
program, the community can come together to gain knowledge and experience that
will create a supportive network within the community. The program can also help the
community improve their practical skills. Instead of learning from the internet, the
community can learn and do it physically. By doing so, it can improve their skills and
make them more confident to perform car maintenance without any supervision from
professional mechanics. Lastly, the program can also save the community time,
especially for those who lack free time. Self-car maintenance can help the community
perform basic repairs and maintenance anytime without the need to book or send a
vehicle to the workshop. By doing so, they can service and maintain their car anytime
without disturbing their schedule.

20
In order to solve the problem faced by the community, there are some support or
resources from the university required as shown below:
i. The intellectual by university students, where they will efficiently organise the
program. Students will ensure that the program runs well and benefits the
community. The program will begin with an explanation and lesson from a
professional before the community attempts to do it themselves.
ii. Physical support from university students where the student will carry out the
program physically. The program is carried out physically in order to provide
a clear explanation and demonstration to the community. In this program, the
community can also try out practical skills.
iii. Energy resources from the university where students will conduct and make
sure the program can be complete successfully. The program will collaborate
with external energy resource, the professional mechanics to make sure the
community can gain good knowledge and skills.

2.5 Significant

DIY car maintenance gives a hug impact to the community in terms of societal, health,
safety and cultural. The impact of this program is:

• Improve financial savings where the community can perform basic

maintenance jobs themselves without needing to pay for professional mechanic
service. This can help those on a tight budget, leading to more efficient
financial management.
• Improve safety awareness so that the community is more aware of issues
related to their vehicles. Knowledge of the importance of car maintenance and
technique can reduce the hazards on the roads and make them safer for the
community.
• Improve community collaboration where the university students coming
together with the car service workshop contribute to the community. The
knowledge shared can strengthen social ties within the community.

21
• Improve environmental health where the program will include environmental
conscious knowledge such as using good-quality products (eco-friendly) and
proper waste disposal. Good environmental conditions will lead to positive
health effects on humans.
• Improve time management where the community can choose or select the
suitable time to perform car maintenance based on their schedule. The
flexibility can be beneficial for the community with a packed schedule.

CHAPTER THREE
SITE VISIT AND COMMUNICATION

3.1 Program venue Survey

Based on the targeted location (Seksyen 7, Shah Alam), our group chose to find the
nearest workshop to collaborate with our program. Our group decided to survey a few
car workshops in Seksyen 7 Shah Alam. Table 3.1 shows the shortlist of car workshops
to be collaborated with our group.

From the shortlist, our group performed research and a site visit on those three
workshops. Based on the research, our group decided to choose Maxzone Autocare
Sdn. Bhd. as our partner to succeed in the program. Maxzone Autocare Sdn. Bhd. was
chosen because of several factors. By comparing all three workshops, Maxzone
Autocare can provide sufficient space for the participant. The location of the workshop
is very suitable for large numbers of participants since it is located in the corner lot.
Compared to other workshops, the space provided is very limited and not suitable for
a large number of participants. Next, Maxzone Autocare will also offer our group free
of charge for the program. For IIR Tyre and Auto Services, the fee charge for the
program is RM200, while Q Car Auto Accessories and Services charges RM150 for
the program. Last but not least, Maxzone Autocare Sdn. Bhd. is more systematic
compared to the other two workshops. Maxzone can confirm the exact date with our
group, while other workshops cannot confirm the date because of low manpower to
serve customers. Figure 3.1 shows the research made in the workshop.

3.2 Communication

Industry

The Continental Maxzone Autocare Sdn Bhd workshop is located at Seksyen 7, Shah
Alam, Selangor. This workshop provides repair and maintenance services for cars. The
process of collaborating with this workshop starts with a site visit. For the
environmental aspect, this workshop is very suitable since it can provide sufficient
space for a large number of participants. On the site visit, our group started to approach
Mr. Wah, the boss at the workshop. Our group starts the conversation by introducing
and explaining the program. After a clear explanation of the program, our group started
to propose to collaborate with the workshop team. Mr. Wah agreed with the
collaboration but needed to reconfirm the date. Our group then decided to have further
discussions with Mr. Wah by phone since he could not confirm the date.

Further discussion was conducted with Mr. Wah through phone calls and
WhatsApps. For the phone call, our group successfully discussed with Mr. Wah the
tentative date and program. The discussion is very short and easy because Mr. Wah is
flexible with his time and easy to cooperate with. The next communication is on
WhatsApp. Through WhatsApp, our group confirmed the date with Mr. Wah to
prevent any technical issues during the program. Figure XX below shows the proof of
communication with Mr. Wah through a phone call and WhatsApp.tentative.

Figure 3.2 Chat and Phone Call with Mr. Wah

25
Society

For the program, our group performs collaboratively and collectively with the society.
For the collaboration, our group collaborated with Bayu Cookiez. Bayu Cookiez is a
small business in Banting, Selangor that makes a variety of desserts. The Bayu
Cookiez was approached by our group through WhatsApp for sponsorship during the
program. Bayu Cookiez agreed to collaborate with our group because they can use this
platform to expose their brand among the participants.

Next, our group also collects money among our group members for the main dish
during the program. The restaurant that we chose as our main dish for lunch is Nasi
Kukus Papa, Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. Firstly, our group survey the price at the
restaurant and get the restaurant's contact information for further discussion. By
comparing the prices, our group decided to book Nasi Lemak as our main dish. Figure

CHAPTER FOUR
PROGRAM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, BUDGET,
COMMUNICATIONM RISK-UTILISE PROJECT
MANAGEMENT TOOLS

4.1 Program Planning

Program planning is the methodical process of creating, arranging, and arranging the
tasks, resources, and activities required to accomplish particular goals and objectives
within a given amount of time. It is a methodical approach that targets a specific set of
needs or difficulties and carefully considers a number of factors to guarantee the
program's success. By following all of them, only then we will have a smooth and
successful event.

The mission and vision of our event in teaching people about servicing their cars are
cantered around promoting safety, efficiency, and sustainability in automotive
maintenance and giving them a basic life skill.

Mission
1. Safety First
In order to guarantee the safety of both drivers and passengers, we emphasise
the significance of routine maintenance of our car. Also, we inform people
about the ways in which routine maintenance can avert mishaps and
malfunctions brought on by mechanical breakdowns.

2. Cost-Effective Maintenance
People should be made aware of the long-term financial advantages of routine
maintenance since it can avoid serious problems, increase the lifespan of their
cars, and make car owners realise that spending money on preventive care is
more economical than on major repairs.

33
Vision
1. A Preventive Maintenance Culture
• Imagine living in a society where regular auto maintenance is accepted
as the norm and a basic knowledge, resulting in safer roads and a
smaller environmental impact.
2. Global Sustainability
• Encourage actions that lessen the automobile industry's overall carbon
footprint to help achieve global sustainability goals.

In order to achieve these missions and visions, an organisational consisting of four

members were formed in order to carried these missions and visions.

4.2 Organization Chart

Figure 4.1 Organization Chart

34
Above is the organisational chart of our team with Muhammad Danial Hakimie being
the Event Director, Muhammad Hafizudin as the Event Technical, Zulhaqimi Irwan as
Event Secretary and Muhammad Irfan Hakimi as the Event Treasurer and Protocol
Planner.

A task list, sometimes referred to as a to-do list, is an easy and well-organized method
of keeping track of assignments, activities, and tasks that must be finished by a certain
date. It provides a clear and concise summary of the tasks that need to be completed,
making it a useful tool for us in organising this event. With this task list, everyone in
the organisation knows when and what to do at what time thus making it proceeding
in order.

If task list is for the entirety of the event from start to finish, a program tentative is
schedule of what and when to do at what time during the event. Before being confirmed
and finalised, a programme is frequently shared with stakeholders for an initial review
and feedback. It permits adaptability and flexibility, particularly in circumstances
where certain details are still being worked out or where adjustments are required in
response to feedback or changing requirements.

36
4.4 Program tentative

Above is the tentative program that will be follow during the event. Granted despite
our best effort not all program ended at the right time since there were some unforeseen
circumstances that require the speaker to attend to.

4.6 Collection and Sponsorship

However, doing this event as big as this would require a lot of money to making sure
it will go smoothly. We as a team went to survey the workshop ourselves and met the
owner of the workshop and discussed about our program and our event. The owner
agreed to help us in providing space and knowledge for this event. Everything is smo

Figure 4.2 Our team discussing with the owner regarding the event.

Now that we have secured the place and the person who can help us in teaching the
attendee about the way to do maintenance on their car, we thought that we cannot let
our attendee to be left hungry since the duration of this event is more than three hours.
We went to one of the restaurants that we are close with and asked then whether they
can prepare our event with foods and beverages. The restaurant’s name is Kedai Nasi
Kukus Papa. The owner agreed to prepare us with 30 packets of Nasi Lemak and tea.

39

We also managed to secure another place to sponsor us dessert for this event. The place
name is Bayu Cookiez and it is one of our group member relative shop. Bayu Cookiez

In order to gain the attention and spreading the info of our event, we created a poster
and publish it through our social media. Since our event was held during weekday,
most of the people are still working, the target of participance for our event was not
more than 10 people. However, on the day of the event, more than 15 people came.
After the event ended, we gave a plaque as appreciation to the workshop employee as
a form of our gratitude.

4.8 Budget

Our treasurer who manages the budget made a planner to calculate the amount of
money that we would need to operate this event. Every member donated RM 40 each
for this event with a total of RM 200. When doing the calculation, the total amount
of money required is RM 510 which is more than our budget. However, after
deducting from the sponsor, we get to save up a significantly large amount of money.
The total budget of RM 510 become RM 15 instead. We also have some balance of
RM 185, and this money will be distributed among us.

4.9 Tools

Planning and executing an event require careful consideration of many factors, not the
least of which is the choice of venue. The venue provides the event's backdrop and has
a big impact on how organisers and attendees feel about it all. Below is the facility
provided by the workshop. This facility is completed with hydraulic jack to lift up the
car that will be lift up for this event in order to explain about it to the attendee. Figure
4.9 shows the workshop facility

This workshop also has a lot of parking space for the attendee park their car. This
parking spaces are reserved, this way Majlis Bandaraya Shah ALam, MBSA, will not
give a ticket for not paying the parking.

4.10 Risk

Organizing an event involves a myriad of tasks and considerations, and with it comes
a range of potential risks. Identifying and managing these risks is crucial to ensure the
success of the event and the satisfaction of participants and stakeholders. Below are
the SWOT Analysis that were made by taking account of all the possibilities at the
workshop
